About the Author
Max Euwe was born on May 20, 1901 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He has long been regarded as almost an accidental world champion. This has resulted in a controversy that is still being debated today: Was Euwe really the strongest player in the world when he won the world championship in 1935? Regardless of that issue, Euwe was certainly the most active and prolific writer about the game. He was never a professional player. He had a real job. He was a math professor. After retirement he became a chess official. He was president of FIDE, the World Chess Federation, from 1970 to 1978. This was during the Cold War and Euwe had to make many difficult decisions for the good of chess. It was absolutely, definitely because of Euwe that Bobby Fischer got to sit down at the board to play a match for the World Chess Championship. Fischer had been disqualified many times along the way, the first time being when he refused to play in the US Championship that was a necessary preliminary to the World Chess Championship competition. Thus, Euwe had to walk the thin tightrope between getting Fischer to play while not causing the Spassky and the Soviets to refuse to compete because of favoritism shown to Fischer. Euwe died on November 26, 1981 in his native Amsterdam at age 80.

Excellent Book on Basics for Adult Beginners, and also on How & Where to Attack, and Defense by Counterattacking
By Tom M
I like this book so much that I bought 3 copies of it - 2 for me and one for a friend.

It's an excellent book for 'adult beginners' (it's 200+ pages, so not for young kids) - it does a great job explaining the basics of openings, middlegame play, and endings using verbal explanations and high-level diagrams, without going through a lot of detailed variations that many beginners get lost in. It's easy to out-grow that part of the book if you're serious about chess, but I can't think of a better book to get started with

But the other part of the book that's great is Chapter 5 on attacking and defense by counterattack. This is good for players with rating up into the 1700s, in my opinion and this is the reason I bought the book for myself the second time (I gave my first copy away after outgrowing beginners' part of the book). I've never seen these basic concepts explained so clearly and simply anywhere else.

The book that taught me to play chess
By djdchess
I played chess when I was in junior high school (top board at my school), but went about 10 years without playing. Recently, as a high school teacher, I started playing a few of my students who are on the chess team.

In order to try to get better, I went to the library and found this book; it completely changed the way I play chess. Before reading this book, I would generally open d4 ... c3 ... e3 and try to develop my queen and light square bishop. I never understood why it was so hard for me to get my rooks in the game or why some players would keep beating me even though I had advanced farther down the board or had won a pawn or two. Once I started reading in this book about the importance of the center; how to develop pieces; the goals of the opening, middle game, and endgame; and the strength of various tactics, chess became like a whole new game.

I am still not what anyone would consider a good chess player (I am relatively even strength with our high school's number 1 board who recently placed 50th in state), but I can tell that I am improving. This book set the foundations for the rest of my growth as a chess player. I feel so strongly about this book that I bought a copy of it for myself and my students. I have loaned it to two of my students already (both of whom felt that it was a great help). I also enjoyed Max Euwe's presentation so much that I bought his books "Chess Master vs Chess Amateur" (which I have already finished and loved) and "Middlegame" (which I am currently reading and finding full of insights that should have been obvious to me but that I never actually realized).

If you have played some chess, want to improve, but don't know where to get started, I highly recommend this book.

The best chess book I have found.
By William H. Bassett
The Logical Approach to Chess is the best book I've found on the subject. It is a good combination of the basics of the game; and in addition it covers some technical issues rarely addressed. I am a chess instructor, and it is rare that I have found a book so suitable to my work. Most books address thier readers with a supercilious attitude and are barely comprehensible, or cover only the most basic of chess rules and procedures. The book is somewhere in between--dealing with complex problems in a coherent manner.
