Stay Away and Simply use the Online Resources from ESRI

What a cluttered mess. The book starts off good enough as it gives you a skeletal JS application to follow and iterate upon, but the format of each chapter then degrades into an overly summarized API survey without any practical code exercises. Sometimes the text gives you parameters in functions and class instances from the API that are assumed to be in the JS program you are writing, but are not included in the given code snippets. I might as well utilize ESRI's GeoNet or the EDN site as those two resources are just as good as this book, and I would have to go there anyway to look up what I missed! Bad call with this book and it is worth the extra money to check out what ESRI or other providers have to offer. Avoid.

Disappointed

I was disappointed to find that not only was this book written for the 3.7 API (it's currently on 3.11), but that many of the examples and tutorials were ripped straight from freely available ESRI tutorials (this is chapter 7: http://developers.arcgis.com/javascript/samples/find_popup/). If ESRI were aware that he'd ripped their tutorials and sold them for money, I doubt they'd be too thrilled. There is little, if anything, in this book that is not ascertainable through ESRI's Javascript API tutorial. Not only that, but there are quite a few errors in both fundamentals and coding practice.

I used this book to demo whether or not Eric's Geospatial Training Services online classes would be worth the money, but I will be passing.

If you're looking for a book on this subject and want to avoid googling, this is the one. Otherwise, I'd avoid it in the future.

Book is mostly SDK examples from ESRI recycled into a book.

This books doesn't even show you how to put it all together and build an application. Mostly just goes over simple examples which are just the SDK examples anyone can download for free and check out live on ESRI website. Really, the SDK examples were not even spruced up before being put in the book.Maybe they are slightly different but still the same simple SDK examples.

Useful? slightly, maybe more so if you have never touched any of this before but then you should be on the ESRI EDN website not reading through a book that just doesn't seem to have much effort put into it.

Obvious observation from reading the other reviews, these people do not own the book, work for the company that published it and/or have never developed an ArcGIS web application and never intend to.

This impressive audio is a version of a London theatrical performance featuring McGregor as Iago, Chiwetel Ejiofor in the role of Othello, and Kelly Reilly playing Desdemona. In a studio recording session, the actors “reproduced as closely as possible the stage production.” Authentic sound effects and background music further enhance the presentation. Experiencing a play aurally is different than viewing a stage performance, and sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between the voices in the predominantly male cast. Nevertheless, this is an excellent vehicle for introducing the classic tragedy to students and Shakespeare fans. An accompanying DVD includes interviews with cast members. Their discussions of the characters, analyses of motivations, and decisions on delivering lines are thoughtfully presented. No annotations on each page

My problem with the Kindle Bantam Classic edition of Othello is that there are no footnotes at the bottom of each page. This means no immediate vocab definitions or comprehension aids. I bought the Kindle edition because my old Signet paperback Othello is yellow with age, plus tiny font. (I'm rereading Othello before watching the live performance starring Blair Underwood and Richard Thomas.) Not being a scholar of Elizabethan English, I do need annotative help with the vocab and idioms. So unfortunately, it's back to the old, barely readable but annotated Signet print version for me.

Great play, great electronic version

Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

A Less Well-Known, Still Enjoyable, Shakespearean Drama

This is a Shakespearean Comedy of Manners from before the genre was even really a fully developed thing, featuring love affairs, a revenge plot, some humorous incompetence, a faked death, and much more. I'm not a big comedy fan, but this is certainly a good example of the genre at the time from which it came, and I actually quite enjoyed it. When it comes to the works of Shakespeare as a whole, I would say that this is a less memorable example, but definitely has some positives going for it as well. For one, it's far less well-known than many of his more famous works, so it doesn't feel familiar as you read it. The characters and plot also tend to grow on you, even as the language isn't quite so memorable, and the plotting and mistaken identities aspects are always good plot points, whether you're speaking of today or centuries ago. As to the edition itself, I found it to be greatly helpful in understanding the action in the play. It has a layout which places each page of the play opposite a page of notes, definitions, explanations, and other things needed to understand that page more thoroughly. While I didn't always need it, I was certainly glad to have it whenever I ran into a turn of language that was unfamiliar, and I definitely appreciated the scene-by-scene summaries. Really, if you want to or need to read Shakespeare, an edition such as this is really the way to go, especially until you get more accustomed to it.

About the Author
Starting with Monopoly at age 6, William Jockusch never saw a game he didn t like. Since then, he has become addicted to risk, chess, Dungeons and Dragons, wargames, various computer games, bridge, Magic: The Gathering, and, most recently, poker, while somehow finding time between his games to earn a PhD in math from MIT. These addictions have spawned many friendships and two careers to date. One is his poker career, which in turn spawned this book.

In addition to his passion for poker, William s interest in games also gave him a passion for game design. For seven years, William worked for Wizards of the Coast, where he helped create and improve new cards for Magic: The Gathering, a card game created by fellow mathematician Richard Garfield.

Applying his game design skills to poker, William created Underpoker, a variant deck which can be used for common forms of poker such as Omaha and hold em.

William has two children with his wonderful wife, Maria. He lives in the Seattle area.

Completely Unnecessary.

I'm generally a PLO player and have appreciated the recent increase in its popularity. I'm also a huge fan of 2+2. However, I'm incredibly disappointed with this new offering. To cut a long story short, if you're going to continue being a game-destroying short stacker, stick to Rolf Slotboom's books. For everyone else, Jeff Hwang's two books are far, far superior to any others on the market.

A number of things really bothered me about Jockusch's book. First, he (correctly) points out that short stackers can have a devastating effect on the game, and even throws in two suggestions at the end of the book (one of which is ridiculous) on how to effectively kill off short stacking. He then proceeds to describe how to play a short stack throughout most of the book, and numerous times he mentions that he's primarily a short stacker. What?!

Secondly, in a game as action driven as PLO, Jockusch has written a book advocating and explaining what could best be described as the nittiest possible way you could imagine to play PLO. This book may help you become profitable at PLO if you aren't already, but it will also make you want to gouge your eyes out.

Third, the layout in the book makes no sense. There are very few hand examples compared to not only Jeff Hwang's books, but 2+2 books in general; not only that, but the vast majority are held to the end of the book and lumped into one chapter, making one have to constantly go back and forth between chapters while reading if one wants to get anything out of the topic at hand.

I could go on, but I think by now you should be heading in the opposite direction from this book. Buy it for the people you regularly play PLO with - *that* will make you more profitable. ;p

Excellent.

Overall, this is a very good book.

It covers a lot of the critical pieces necessary for winning PLO play, including concepts on what types of hands you are looking for, preflop play, play from the blinds, how to adjust to preflop actions by others, wraps, playing AAxx, defending vs AAxx, flopping made hands, flopping big draws, flopping marginal draws and flopping marginal hands, hand reading, bluffing and more. It has more than 60 pages of sample hands to bring home

The two main criticisms I've seen are 1) it focuses on short-stacking which is true, and probably too much so. But while the purists don't like it (for valid reasons), it can be a profitable strategy and should be covered, imho, 2) the hand examples are clumped at the end of the book, which is probably not ideal, but seems a bit of a minor criticism. After all, if you're flipping from a section to the hand examples at the end of the section, your fingers are holding 5 pages vs 60 pages, but whatever, and to a lesser extent, 3) the author recommends playing a nittier style where he plays more passively. I'm not sure what I think of this, as you have to play the style that makes you money. Part of this is related to playing a laying a short-stack, where correct play has you playing fewer hands.

The only other real competition for "Best Single PLO Book To Buy" is Jeff Hwang's Pot-Limit Omaha Poker, so a few thoughts comparing them.

Advantages of this book:
- Covers a lot more PLO material at roughly 300 pages vs Hwang's 160 pages
- Has roughly 90 pages on post-flop play vs Hwang's 20 pages. Since post-flop play is where more of the money is made, this is a pretty important difference.
- Has more depth and breadth on basics. Has more material on for example what to do based on opponents actions, and also on blind play, and deeper discussion of specifics.
- Good material for a wide variety of styles, but focuses a bit more on short-stack play

Advantages of Hwang's
- Focused more on deeper-stacked play
- Covers a bit more upfront on conceptual materials, and what you are looking for when playing PLO.
- Includes more examples of which specific hands to play preflop, ie. translating the concepts to specifics.
- Has a strong section on straight draws: the structure of them, number of outs and so on.
- Covers other games besides PLO: specifically Limit Omaha 8 or better, and Pot Limit Omaha 8 or better.
- Overall, this is a very good book also.

Overall, this book is a bit of a better choice for a single book to get, but really, if you are going to play PLO for money, it's well worth your time to get both as they emphasize slightly different things.

it's ok if you're new to this game

bottom line is, this book's 'ok' if you're a new player to this game.

i've been playing PLO for over a year now and am a consistent winner at it. i've read all of hwangs books and it's given me a huge edge over most of the live players, not all, but most.

get this book if you're new to PLO. i don't think it'll make you a consistent winner at the game, but it'll help build some basics.

it is well written in terms of making it easy for the readers to read and understand whats going on in a hand.

Great starting point for studying the intersection of science and sound

This book is an excellent starting place for someone who wants a somewhat quantitative treatment of the science of sound as it relates to music, but does not have the advanced math background necessary to digest something like "The Physics of Musical Instruments". The chapters and sections in this third edition are the same as in the previous edition, however some changes have been made to the content. The book is updated with more current references to the end-of-chapter bibliographies, and there is some new material, especially in areas affected by the personal computer's role in the digital processing of sound.

The author provides an integrated understanding of three major areas: the production of sound by various sources, the propagation of sound from source to listener, and the perception of sound by the human brain.

For easier reading, each chapter starts with an introductory section that sets up the chapter. There are also summaries and lists of symbols, terms, and relations highlighting the most important terms and quantitative expressions in each chapter. There are realistic and interesting exercise sets containing both qualitative and quantitative questions for each chapter, with most chapters containing 20-25 exercises. There are also projects included that provide out-of-class assignments that generally require students to do research. There are approximately three of these in each chapter. Finally, several new photographs have been added to this third edition, particularly of the inner ear structure and of the vocal cords in motion.

Like the previous reviewer, I make a habit of purchasing and reading several textbooks a year, and sometimes I am very disappointed and sometimes I am not. This is one of those purchases that I found most worthwhile. If you are interested in the intersection of math, acoustics, perception, and musical instruments I highly recommend it. A math background up to the level of algebra and geometry should be sufficient to understand the quantitative portions of the book. The table of contents is as follows:

This book is a thorough overview of physics behind music. In the first part of the book, Hall lays the foundation with an investigation into waves, sound propagation, sound measurement, and the human ear. The middle third of the book takes up families of instruments, and how they work to create musical sounds. The last part of the book investigates room acoustics, sound reproduction, and the perception of intervals, tunings, and musical structure. Each chapter includes references and suggestions for further reading, numerous mathematical exercises for practicing the concepts covered in the chapter, and a list of potential projects for further investigation. The book includes a glossary and answers to selected problems, as well as an index.
I read quite a few textbooks for work and occasionally just for interest's sake, but this one really stands out. After reading the first few chapters, I found myself wishing I could sit in on Hall's lectures. His style is intensely personal, and his explanations are incredibly clear. I'll admit that sometimes my eyes glossed over while slogging through some of the numbers and charts, but it was mainly my fault for not being a more active reader. In order to get the most from this book, you really need to read it with calculator in hand, or better yet, an Excel spreadsheet open, ready to try out the numbers and scenarios that Hall provides us with. Nevertheless, the math is kept quite simple- -no calculus; if you can do algebra, you should be able to get through the book.
I've found the information in the book to be quite useful. Hall's description of how resonance works in drums has helped me make sense of my tabla teacher's pickiness about where my fingers strike the tabla heads. And at last I understand the physics behind why some rooms in my house are acoustically dead, and others are alive. Hall has opened up a new world of ideas for me, and I will be thinking them through for years to come. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how music really works.

Amazon Drops the Ball Again -- Make Sure It's the Signet version

This is for the NON-150th anniversary edition of the Signet Chekhov Short Stories translated by Anne Dunnigan.

The Kindle link is not the Signet Edition. The Amazon Mayday employee couldn't grasp this most basic fact, so it's probably still there.

The cover is Signet. Not the contents. If you look carefully, the real Signet version -- currently more expensive at 7.99 -- is sold by Penguin. The fake one is not.

About the Author
Stephen E. Flowers studied Germanic and Celtic philology at the University of Texas and in Göttingen, West Germany. He received his Ph.D. in 1984 in Germanic Languages and Medieval Studies. His dissertation was published in book form as Runes and Magic (Peter Lang, 1984). Other books by Dr. Flowers include Fire & Ice (Llewellyn, 1990) and Lords of the Left-Hand Path (Rûna-Raven, 1997). He has also translated and edited The Secret of the Runes by Guido von List (Destiny, 1988) and the Icelandic grimoire The Galdrabók (Weiser, 1989). He is presently the director of the Woodharrow Institute for Germanic and Runic Studies in Texas.

Michael Moynihan studied languages and history at the University of Colorado and Portland State University, and received his B.A. in German in 2000. He is the co-author with Didrik Søderlind of Lords of Chaos (Feral House, 1998), and has edited two books by the Italian traditionalist philosopher Julius Evola: Introduction to Magic (Inner Traditions, 2001) and Men Among the Ruins (Inner Traditions, 2002). He is the North American Editor of the journal Rûna (London, UK) and contributes regularly to other periodicals.

Well...I read The Secret King and was not overly impressed. I wouldn't say it was horrible, but the book didn't hold my interest. I actually had he urge to stop reading after only a dozen or so pages, but plodded trough as best I could. Wilgut's influence on Himmler is undeniable, but there were other more significant factors that made Himmler the man that he was. Prior to and at the time the Nazi's came to power, pagan thought and occult practices captured the imagination of many Germans, especially the party's leadership. And Himmler was at the top of the heap. While The Secret King is certainly readable, there are better books on the topic that get to the root of Himmler's mind.

The Secret Reports of the Nazi SS Rune Magician

Dr. Stephen Flowers has provided use with a unique opportunity to look inside the works of one of the legendary Germanic Rune Magicians - Karl Maria Wiligut.

Beginning with a detailed introduction, Dr. Flowers then provides clear and understandable translations of Wiligut's writings that are available from no other easily accessible source. Wiligut was a contemporary of such men Guido von List and Jorg Lanz von Liebenfels, and was certainly influenced by the work of these great men.

Later in his life Wiligut was commissioned by Heinrich Himmler - leader of the Nazi SS - to write reports on the Runes, Germanic traditions and pre-Christian history. It is portions of this work that we find translated in "The Secret King".

Certainly not a book for the beginner or someone with a mere curiosity about the Runes, "The Secret King" provides depth and insight for those who have already gained more than a superficial knowledge of the topic in question.

Hmm.. lost me about 1/2 way through...

Well, the introduction gives a decent introduction to Wiligut's basic ideas, but I would have liked more background in Wiligut's involvement with the Nazi party and Himmler. There are vauge references to Wiligut being rejected by the Ahnenrbe as "too fanciful", but more treatment would have been a real bonus. An introduction to rune-ology, and its historical placement & impact on Germanic/Nazi thought would have helped place Wiligut in a broader historical perspective.
Wiligut's writings, which make up the bulk of the book are for the die-hard fan only. You will need a serious grounding in contemporary germanic metaphysical thought to get much out of it.
Layout & printing of the book present well (and it gets an extra star for it)

Hysterical and yummy!

I am so sad that other people found this book lacking. I laughed, I almost cried, and I was thoroughly entertained. I love Suzanne Enoch's books. You never know what to expect and The Rake was a perfect example of this.
Lord Dare is very yummy and once he decides that he wants Lady Georgianna for his own, nothing will stop him, even an ill-placed wager, the fact that the lady in question thinks she hates him, or a debutante set on being the next Lady Dare. Georgianna and Tristan's encounters were witty and fast-paced and exactly what you want to read during the summer or even a cold winter evening. I only wish I could find a man as enchanted with me as Tristan is with Georgianna.
Suzanne Enoch's books are the best and I will continue to read them over and over.

Great story of forgiveness

This was my first Enoch book and I've now read all her books because I loved it so much. She creates great characters who really compliment each other and are a pleasure to read. Dare and Georgiana are equals, all throughout. She's not a simpering miss hoping to catch a man or desperate for a proposal. He doesn't think he has the right to talk down to her or give her orders. Although these two people have hurt each other, they never do so in the cruel, abrasive way found in other "romances."

They have a rough past that they work through and *shock* actually talk about and resolve. Sex does not magically heal all in this book. Neither character forgives the other just because they can't resist the passion between them. Enoch always does a fabulous job of developing great characters you grow to love.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a good romance that doesn't contain subjugation or submissiveness. Not a spanking, rape, or vicious arm-grabbing in sight.

No Matter what - Still a Great Book

I've read the other reviews and have to disagree with the negativity by some of the other reviewers. Suzanne Enoch has created another wonderful story!
At first, I didn't know whether or not I still liked Lord Dare after finding out what he had done to Geeorgiana so many years past. Yes, he was a rake of the worst sort, but you have to realize he was young and dumb, and his worst mistake was to not try to make amends way back then!
Georgiana and Tristan both had a lot of growing up to do and in this novel you saw them both grow and both become nicer people. In Georgiana's quest to teach Tristan a lesson - she learned a lesson as well! You still experienced the same wonderful Enoch sense of humor, the amazingly witty dialog and the very sensual foreplay and sex! The love story was sweet, and I really liked this story and would definitely recommend it to my regency loving romance friends. I look forward to more from Suzanne Enoch in this next "Lessons in Love" series!

Get Ripped With Kettlebells, The Easy Way

I’ve purchased a lot of exercise books, and have even written a few on my own. However, I didn’t get into Kettlebells until recently, and have found this book to be incredible. It’s 100+ pages of tips, tricks, and workouts that fully explain how you can get seriously ripped with workouts that use these Russian tools.

If you adhere to what is said in the training tips here, you will lose weight, gain lean muscle and get seriously strong. It’s impressive to see all the different options that you have in this book, as it’s far more than you will get with many other exercise books on Kindle right now. Even if you only put in 10 to 15 minutes a day with the tips found here, you will get results, guaranteed. It’s the best investment you’ll make, a quality workout book.

The workouts are easily explained, has photographs, and will explain everything you can possibly want about kettlebells. I highly recommend it.

If you're looking to get ripped, this is what you need

I personally found this book to be superb for teaching me more of the best ways to get a ripped body using nothing other than kettle bells.

Another added benefit for me was the fact that the book is 100+ pages- not too long and not too short. It gives you enough tips and tricks without stuffing your head with unnecessary facts and info.

The workouts were very easy to follow and the photographs really helped me to get a better idea of how to do the moves. I found this to be an absolutely fantastic book for kettle bell training and would recommend it to others without hesitation.

Great Kettlebell Workouts

This book provides some of the best workouts I've seen.
I really like that this book provides pictures along with the workouts, because most other books don't provide any pictures at all.
I found this to be a very helpful & useful book.
Overall, I definitely recommend this.
