Review
Ordinary teens become extraordinary in this thrilling tale of good versus evil...Skillfully written, this novel will captivate teens, including reluctant readers. --Publishers Weekly

THE DEMON QUEEN AND THE LOCKSMITH has a fresh, creative feel...is well written, fast paced and full of suspense. --2010 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest Reviewer

With great pace in his dialogue and a style reminiscent of early Stephen King I became enthralled...a complex origami of plots and subplots that came together to reveal an original tale filled with horror and suspense. --Chilli Tween Reads

From the Author
As a teen, I loved the masterpieces of young adult angst by Lois Duncan and Robert Cormier, the forbidden (in Catholic School) horror novels of Stephen King, and the fantastic yarns of Jules Verne. When I wasn't reading in those days, I was watching movie monsters destroy Tokyo or the 1970's classic Bugs Attack! flicks.

The Demon Queen and The Locksmith is all of the above: The Chocolate War, Daughters of Eve, It, Space Giants, and Empire of the Ants thrown in to a blender and poured on the page. I hope you enjoy!

About the Author
Spencer Baum lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with his wife, Julie, and their three children.

Couldn't Put This Book Down!
By Elisheva H. Levin
I enjoyed reading this book so much that I couldn't put it down. Kevin Brown, a resident of the fictional Turquoise, NM--which is a lot like Taos, including the mountain and the Hum--meets two new friends and is immediately swept up in an adventure through which he discovers the secret of the Hum and the importance of his own choices and powers. Spencer Baum writes with an eye to ideas, but he never loses his sense of fun and adventure. His teens are both believable and likeable. Most importantly, Baum lets the action carry the themes; he is never preachy. This is a great book for young adults and the young at heart!

The Demon Queen and the Locksmith
By BigAl
The fantasy genre has been severely neglected in my reading materials over the years, although I have read some. One way "The Demon Queen and the Locksmith" differs from what I've previously read is the "story world" is at least nominally the world in which all of us live. Whether genre purists would still consider this fantasy or not, I have no idea. At least for me, that doesn't matter, the story does, and in this case it is a good one.

The first day of high school is trying for everyone. For Kevin it starts out worse than most. His reaction, fleeing school for the day, sets off a chain of events leading to a magical adventure. It allows him a temporary escape from his less-than-perfect life and in the end to change it for the better.

Throughout the book, it felt more like a fairy tale than a typical fantasy. I often found myself thinking the story was allegorical although, if so, I was never able to pinpoint why I felt that or deduce the symbolism. In the end it doesn't matter whether this was my overactive imagination or not, because the story works so well. If escapism is one of the reasons for reading fiction then "The Demon Queen and the Locksmith" should allow a teen (or an adult for that matter) an escape from the problems of their real world life as they follow Kevin on his adventure.

Good Solid Fantasy
By Collin J. Earl
The story takes place In Turquoise, New Mexico where a strange group of people live called the Hearers. The story revolves around fourteen-year-old Kevin Brown who doesn't trust the Hearers, including his dad who is one of them. Kevin lives a fairly inconspicuous, uneventful live and suffers because of the death of his mother a year previous. Things change on the first day of high school when Kevin and some new friends eat the "magic" sap of a oak tree. The adventure starts there.

The Pros: The mythology created within the story was interesting. Mr. Braums does a good job, despite the jumping of perspectives, at keeping the continuity of the story, which can be hard to do. Everything was well thought out and consistent plot and character wise and very little in the way of questions exist by the end of the story. As a fantasy novel, there is a "system" of magic and that was also interesting if not a little on the vague side. For most part the triller and fantasy portions were interwoven well, were fun as they unfolded and inviting enough that it left you thinking after it was all said and done. The plot was well honed and straight forward with not alot of "extra" to bog it down. The good parts were done very well.

The Cons: I thought the pacing was a little poor, the characters, besides Kevin and the "villain," won't say who because I don't want to give it away, lacked depth and the ending was weak. The real action sequences where the "good guys" could and should fight back was a big let down. I felt the resolution was sort of a cop out as the "battle" between the demons was there and ready to roll and never really came to fruition. That is my major complaint.

Overall, however, this story is very much worth the read especially if there is the possibility that further stories in this universe will be done. If you like straight forward, fun fantasy, you'll like this story.
