Historiographic Metafiction: Or Lying with the Truth, by Barry Pomeroy

I ground this reading of historiographic metafiction in a series of postmodern texts which work out of and subvert traditional notions of historical writing. I use Linda Hutcheon’s construction of this postmodern genre to investigate the particular literary and historical strategies these texts use and abuse in order to write an alternative history. Beginning by reviewing the theory surrounding historical fiction as well as historiography, I investigate the specific textual strategies that historiographic genres—such as the postmodern novel, the Canadian long poem, the short story and to some extent, the film genre—use to present their self-reflexive interaction between history and fiction.

Excellent Oldie.
By Opah Jorge
An oldie. Got the two together for my father. All three of us are of the liking, but he's of the era. Good words from a soft spoken man. The book itself is beautifully laid out and the jacket design is classically retro. Brought out a pleasantly surprised smile.

'This is an extremely insightful book on an important and timely topic - how to get women on to corporate boards. I am proud to have been a part of the discussion and processes presented in this book, and I am impressed by how the editors have put together a systematic and comprehensive overview of the snowball effects of the Norwegian gender balance law. This book will definitely be influential when policy-makers and politicians in various countries are considering voluntary actions or legal regulations to empower women in corporate life.'

Catalyst has always believed that competing in a global economy requires that companies leverage the talents of both men and women leaders. Review
This slim but informative volume contains contributions from practitioners, policy-makers, principle-setters, advocacy groups and researchers on gender balance in the boardroom, the outcomes of the Norwegian quota law and its snowball effects in other countries...The book contains personal stories and research from around the world. . . The stories of the Norwegian pioneers were of most interest to me, providing color and a clearer picture of what was involved - more than any piece of statistical research can deliver. However, the book also has much to offer to Americans and others who must argue not for justice but bottom line performance...Whether you are interested in micro or macro issues of economics, politics or justice - it delights. --James McRitchie, CorpGov.net

Ibn 'Arabi in the Later Islamic Tradition: The Making of a Polemical Image in Medieval Islam (Suny Series in Islam) (Suny Series, Islam)

This book examines the fierce theological controversy over the great Muslim mystical thinker Ibn 'Arabi (1165-1242). Even during his lifetime, Ibn 'Arabi's conformity with the letter of the Muslim dogma was called into doubt by many scholars who were suspicious of the monistic (unitive) tendencies of his metaphysical teaching, of his claims to be the Prophet's successor and restorer of the true meaning of the Islamic revelation, and of his allegorical interpretation of the Qur'an. In thoroughly analyzing the heated debates around Ibn 'Arabi's ideas throughout the three centuries following his death, this study brings out discursive strategies and arguments employed by the polemicists, the hidden agendas they pursued, and the reasons for the striking longevity of the issue in Islamic literature up to the present day. On the theoretical level, this book reassesses the validity of such common dichotomies as orthodoxy versus heresy, mainstream versus mystical interpretations of Islam, and communalism versus individualism as well as other issues related to the history of Islamic thought.

Review
"Knysh has looked at exactly who were the supporters and opponents of Ibn 'Arabi for several centuries after his death, where they were getting their information, why they should have taken the position they took, and so forth. The author brings together a lot of tidbits in the secondary literature that people have not connected, and he does so with careful attention to the primary texts." -- William C. Chittick, author of The Self Disclosure of God: Principles of Ibn 'Arabi's Cosmology

The Great Sheykh and his detractors
By Linas Kondratas
The book of A.D. Knysh is an excellent reader for those who are interested not only in the personality of Ibn Arabi himself or his ideas, but also in the reception of these ideas by the medieval Muslim society (second half of XIII to XV centuries) in the framework of which Ibn Arabi lived. The author takes completely impartial, scholarly position without leaning for or against the Great Sheykh. The author limits himself to Arab speaking regions (Egypt and Syria, Maghreb and Yemen) This reception as it appears was far from unanimous and produced a heated polemics which started just two decades after Great Sheykh's death. The detractors of Ibn Arabi who were more numerous than supporters subjected Ibn Arabi's work to rigorous criticism and very often outright condemnation. One of the driving forces behind the criticism was the care of the Islamic scholars about the interest of the community and their apprehension that Ibn Arabi's monistic worldview blurring the distinction between God and the world, and the idea about the invisible hierarchy of saints etc. can make prejudice to the beliefs, morality and social order of the Islamic ummah. The struggle for the ideas of Ibn Arabi was not always disinterested struggle on dogmatic matters, it was often related with the vying for quite "earthly" things such as official positions, power and social prestige. Quite often the deabate was quite dangerous and fraught with serious consequences for those involved in it. A.Knysh shows that the detractors of Ibn Arabi were not completely able to comprehend the entire sophistication of Great Sheykh's style and ideas. Yet, to his opinion, they were able comprehend the key issues of his teaching especially those which can ideological or social relevance to broad masses of the believers. However the usual taxonomic schema used by medieval authors to classify the figures of the Islamic thought(specialist of hadith, jurist, theologian, mystic) has appeared inappropriate to fully comprehend the sophisticated teachings of the Great Sheykh which defied all the attempts of classification( extreme literalism and thorough going exotericism both present in the works of Ibn Arabi). Besides that under the main themes in Ibn Arabi's became settled there were little attempt to cast a fresh into the Sheykh's work. The detractors, as well as the supporters, are shown to be not limited to any particular school or sect, rather the line between being pro- or against Ibn Arabi runs across various schools. The author shows that being anti Ibn Arabi by far was not equivalent with being anti Sufi, and that the absolute majority of the detractors were in one or other form affiliated with Sufism or exposed to its ideas. A.Knysh equally questions the usual assumption about the struggle between " "Theologians" with "Sufis" showing that most of the participants of the debate were all the three, and that the debate was the encounter between the various standpoints in both theology and Sufism. A. Knysh also questions the usual assumption when Islam is presented as an "orthoprax" religion where dogmatic difference are not so important when the requirements of ritual decorum are satisfied. The heated debated on the doctrinal issues concerning the "unity of being" clearly show the opposite. While describing the reception of Ibn Arabi's ideas in the Western part of the Islamic world the author shows that differently from the Eastern lands of Islam, Ibn Arabi was not considered here such paramount figure or founder of the monistic school, but rather as a representative of the broader tradition or "plot" of monists, and Ibn Sab`in, another monistic Sufi from Maghreb was considered of equal importance to Ibn Arabi, if not greater. A.Knysh devotes separate chapters or parts of them to some of more known detractors of Ibn Arabi such as Syrian Shafi`i scholar Izz al-Din Abd al-Salam who as the first detractor and contemporary of Ibn Arabi had great importance to later makers of the polemic image, to well-know Hanbali Ibn Taimiyya, and to Hanafite al-Taftazani. In the chapter devoted to Maghreb he analyses three specific personalities, one of them being the famous Ibn Khaldoon. Chapters are also devoted to the reception of Ibn Arabi's ideas in Mamlook kingdom of Egypt and Syria, and in Yemen. Since the Islamic life of Yemen is relatively little known, and A.Knysh is one of the leading experts on Yemeni Islam, this chapter of his book is especially interesting and instructive.

A classic debate in Medieval Islam
By Rumi Fan
This is an incredible piece of scholarship. Professor Knysh, a Russian scholar of Islam, demonstrates his mastery of the vast literature of Islam in various languages including Arabic, Turkish, German, French, and Russian. This is the first major account of the intellectual battles raging on in the Middle East between two opposing giants: the school of Ibn Arabi and the school of Ibn Taymiyya. However, to be fair, it is mostly concerned with the scholarly attacks led by Ibn Taymiyya against the doctrine of wahdat al-wujud of Ibn Arabi. What makes this account so fascinating is the survey of the political and intellectual environment of Medieval Damascus, and Egypt.

It is clear from Professor Knysh's analysis how important the ulama and Islamic religious institutions were for Muslim Sultans, rulers, and princes. In particular, it highlights the intricate, and complex relationship between the Mamluk state and the religious scholars of Islam. The 13th century was a watershed moment in Islamic political history with the Mongol devastation in the central Muslim lands and the continuous Christian Crusades into the Levant. While it seemed that Muslim civilization was on the brink of collapse from these two assaults, along come the Mamluks of Damascus and Egypt who boldly stopped the Mongol advance in Palestine in the famous battle of Ayn Jalut, near present day Galilea. The role of the stalwart Mamluks in well known to peole of the Middle East. However, what is often overlook in the patronage and funding that the Mamluks provided to Islamic learning and to Islamic scholars. This is witnessed by the huge number of sufi lodges and madrasas supported and funded by Mamluk princes and rulers. Scholars such as Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn Arabi, al-Dhahabi, and Ibn Atallah were some of the major scholars who owed their support to the Mamluk rulers of that time, though the relationship with Ibn Taymiyya is complicated by the persecution he faced by his opponents.

Knyshs' contribution to this important time period is to lay out a narrative which demonstrates the critique of some of the theological views of Ibn Arabi by Ibn Taymiyya and his ideological supporters. He traces how the critique developed and who the central partisans were. It is clear from Professor Knysh's analysis that Ibn Taymiyya was not anti-tasawwuf or sufism. Many opponents of tasawwuf today use Ibn Taymiyya as a sword in discrediting sufism and undermining its legitimacy in Islam. However, this view is misplaced given that Ibn Taymiyya commended many aspects of sufi practice and also praised many sufi leaders and thinkers. Ibn Taymiyya's main problem was the central cosmological worldview of Ibn Arabi's wahdat al-wujud which is often referred to Islamic "monism." This view essentially argues that God is the only true reality while everything thing else he creates is temporary and unreal.

The footnotes are useful and comprehensive but often hinder the narrative of the story. But this is to be expected in a scholarly work. This book is not for novices but for those who are acquainted with the Islamic scholarly and intellectual tradition.

A Fighter's Heart: One Man's Journey Through the World of Fighting, by Sam Sheridan

In 1999, after a series of wildly adventurous jobs around the world, Sam Sheridan found himself in Australia, loaded with cash and intent on not working until he’d spent it all. It occurred to him that, without distractions, he could finally indulge a long-dormant obsession:  fighting. Within a year, he was in Bangkok training with the greatest fighter in muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) history and stepping through the ropes for a professional bout. That one fight wasn’t enough. Sheridan set out to test himself on an epic journey into how and why we fight, facing Olympic boxers, Brazilian jiu-jitsu stars, and Ultimate Fighting champions. Along the way, Sheridan delivers an insightful look at violence as a career and a spectator sport, a behind-the-pageantry glimpse of athletes at the top of their terrifying game.  An extraordinary combination of gonzo journalism and participatory sports writing, A Fighter’s Heart is a dizzying first-hand account of what it’s like to reach the peak of finely disciplined personal aggression, to hit—and be hit.

From Booklist
Sheridan joined the merchant marines after high school, eventually graduated from Harvard, and worked his way to Australia on a yacht. There, in 1999, he decided to indulge his fascination with fighting, hoping to test himself and explore what has become a mostly sublimated aspect of masculinity. After some months of training in Australia, he moved to Bangkok to train with a legendary Muay Thai (kickboxing) champion. That experience--and his first professional bout--expanded into a multiyear odyssey in which he trained with Olympic boxers, Brazilian jujitsu champions, and Ultimate Fighting combatants. The magic in his account is in the telling detail--not only about how he suffers, trains, and fights but also about his reactions to his surroundings; the way, for example, he finds himself gradually becoming indifferent to the street orphans of Brazil, desensitized by their very omnipresence. It isn't Sheridan's toughness or fearlessness that makes this an involving excursion into a shadow world; it's his ability to re-create the textures of those shadows and to make us care about his oddly quixotic journey. Why do men fight?
By Hulk hands
This book is the story of a man's journey through various forms of combat and competition. The author, Sam, tells his story of travelling the world and investigating the culture of fighting positing questions like "Why do people fight?" while discovering things about himself and his own motivations along the way.

Sam's adventures can be relevant even to those who are not particularly interested in martial arts and can appeal far beyond martial arts enthusiasts to anyone who has an interest in the human condition. From the perspective of the author as a student of numerous martial arts philosophies throughout the story, we learn the common denominator of all forms of combat in which humans play a part (even a few involving animals, like dog fighting). The author does not hide the grim reality of injuries that result from participating in these martial arts, as he receives a good deal of punishment in the course of learning, all of the events that transpire are in the spirit of exploration of the common denominator.
Activities the author studies range from Tai Chi to Muay thai to western boxing to Brazilian Jujitsu and beyond. When I began reading the book I was mildly interested in the author's experience studying Muay Thai abroad, my initial motivation for reading the book, but by the end I could appreciate in more depth the motivations of practitioners of violence from MMA fighters to pit bulls.

There are several major appealing factors of this book.
1) It attempts to make hand-to-hand combat relevant even to the non-fighter
2) The sheer scope of styles covered can be a draw to anyone with a general interest in martial arts
3) Even those who do not condone physical combat can appreciate the honesty of of the author in his quest for understanding the fighting spirit
4) The author is a great storyteller, and spins his yarn to engage and relate to the reader

I'm a poor reader, generally speaking, but I could not put this book down once I started reading it. I highly recommend it.

I never too much interest in fighting before a couple months ago, but I recently started doing muay thai (kickboxing) and a friend told me about this book. If you're not a fighter, but have ever wondered why people make such a fuss over these brutal spectacles, this book will give you a peek into the mind of a fighter. If you are a practitioner of combative sports, I think you'll be able to relate to Sam, his questions, and his adventures all the more.

Plenty of "Heart"
By Kaye Washington
A Fighter's Heart by Sam Sheridan decodes the mystery of the pugilistic, roughhousing or mixing it up instinct, one I never really "got." There has been plenty said and written about the urge or instinct, but "Heart" provides a context, a ringside view in setting after setting, one fight then another, on one continent and then another, in the experiences the author (also a fighter) has in Eastern and Western styles, from the ancient, classic and traditional to the newer, Mixed Martial Arts fighting forms. If you never really understood why a person would as an amateur, a pro or for play start, join or continue a fight, then you'll be intrigued by this page turner. The reasons for the fight are more than "just meet me outside," more than we ever might have figured. On the home front, Sheridan gives us a look at the making of 2004 Olympic Gold medalist for the U.S., Andre Ward and his trainer, Virgil Hunter.

From the Back Cover
The cover photos show two people in two places connected to a wider world through modern technology. For many, such images evoke a world of social, economic, and cultural "globalization." Yet what does globalization mean? Are the lives of the individuals on the cover, one in Yemen (front cover) and the other in the United States (back cover), converging? Can we increasingly think of ourselves as living in one world? Some might say "yes," but a look into the geographical context within which these individuals lead their lives reveals a more complicated answer. These two people live in places that have developed distinct human and physical attributes. Moreover, there is a geography to globalization itself, in that internationalized technologies, economic interactions, and cultural forms affect some places more than others. If we are to understand the complexities of the modern world, we must consider how global forces are interacting with local and regional geographies to produce the patterns and processes that are shaping our constantly changing, endlessly fascinating world.

Marred by inaccuracies
By Canadian reader
The prose in this book is well-written and easy to read, a blessing given how indigestibly ponderous most textbooks are, even when they're expressing otherwise simple ideas. It's what the text says and doesn't say that's at issue.

On the Middle East, for example, the text notes that Palestinians "migrated or fled" during the 1948 war. Fair enough, it's an attempt not to take sides regarding the wildly different narratives of this event, a tragedy in the lives of 600,000 people. But the text does not even mention that at the same time, in direct response to the founding of Israel, 800,000 Jews in Arab Middle Eastern countries were expelled from these countries. That's a strange omission in a book on human geography. At another point in the book we read that from 1917 to 1948, when Palestine was under the British Mandate, the British ENCOURAGED Jewish immigration to Palestine. I guess that's why so many Jews, fleeing death from the Nazis with nothing but the clothes on their backs, were forced to risk their lives again, trying to land on the beach in the middle of the night from leaky ships out of Cyprus. The immigration quotas imposed on Jews during the British Mandate are a historical fact. I don't know enough about other areas of the world to critique what the text says about them----it would be interesting to hear from other reviewers--but with this level of omission and inaccuracy, can I trust anything else the book says?

In addition, a glance through the book reveals other errors and confusions. Page 4: What are the units for the Gross National Income in the map? US dollars? Or is this a relative scale? Page 14-15: 90% or over of what?? 90% of Calfiornia students said they'd prefer to live in California? California received an approval rating of 90% or over as a place to live? Page 40: The world population distribution says that "1 dot represents 100,000 people". Note that there is ONE dot in the vicinity of, I guess, Calgary and none in the vicinity of Edmonton--both cities now have about a million people, so they should have about 10 dots each, no? And this is just in the first 40 pages.

This book was supposed to be released in December 2005, but there were delays and I received the book only yesterday. There should have been time to pick up mistakes like the above.

EXCELLENT TEXTBOOK!!!

I wanted to take the Human Geography AP Exam but we didn't have a course at our school so I had to study for it on my own. As there are no published AP guides, my only source of information was this textbook. I not only scored a 5 on the exam, but I also tested out of the second semester of Human Geography once I got to college as well!! Fabulous textbook!
