With its easy-to-use index and definitive explanations, this third edition makes life simpler for writers, editors, and proofreaders. You may never need to know about frontispieces and imprimaturs, but if you deal with words, this is a wonderfully edifying, reassuring fount of clarity and wisdom.

Fascinating and informative, only minor parts of it are dated

If you're a writer or editor or just someone who loves books and the English language, get this book. Even if it's just for browsing and historical interest, you'll likely love it. I picked up one that was "used, like new" and it has been well worth the price.

Simply put, Word into Type covers everything there was to say about making a book in the 1970s, from manuscript structure, to copyediting, to grammar points, to references and indexes (yes, I meant that instead of "indices"), to details of how manuscript review works from draft to galley to proof. Most of that information is the same today, as books, English grammar, and style are mostly the same. The quaint bits about things like leading (spacing and bars used in old typesetting) are interesting and detract very little. I'd say about 90% of the content is applicable today -- and since it is over 500 pages, that's a lot.

Compared to the Chicago guide, Word into Type is more comprehensive on the process and more readable. It serves as less of a reference than the Chicago guide and does not answer every question about every kind of academic citation. Thus, I find that the two work well together.

Here's an example. Last night I read the section on how to make an index, which is something I need to do soon for a project. Skillin explains how and why to do this starting from the page proofs, which is something I've been told before with the explanation why. She then suggests using index cards -- OK, that's quaint and probably not applicable today -- and then proceeds into superb guidance on exactly how to construct a useful index and tips on many of the kinds of points that will come up (e.g., which words to lead, how to index multiple page sections, and so forth). Overall, some of that is applicable to my project and some is not, but she gives enough of the overall context and structure of the task -- most of which has not changed in 40 years -- that I learned a lot and will be better prepared.

Having said that, don't expect it to read like a novel or a popular book about grammar. It is a reference, albeit one that is more narrative and enjoyable than most. I use Words into Type mostly as a book I love to browse and read sections randomly, whereas I only look at the Chicago guide when I need a specific style point. I'm considering to order more copies to give to writer friends.

Information on the non-existent fourth edition!

I recently bought a replacement copy of this must-have guide (much better than Chicago, I'm afraid). Before that I'd been doing research to find a copy of an alleged fourth edition (since the third was from 1974!). The mysterious fourth ed. proved impossible to find despite having an ISBN number. I tracked down the author, retired Oklahoma State University Professor Thomas Warren, and asked him directly what was going on. Here's his reply:

"Prentice-Hall cancelled the contract years ago, and even after that, the title appeared on Amazon, P-H listings, and even had an ISBN number. There is no 4th edition as far as I know. Sorry to disappoint you."

Why on earth would Prentice-Hall have canceled the contract? Maybe we should start a campaign to get this new edition published. Surely there's a readership for it!

Should be on every editor's and writer's bookshelf

Despite being published way back in 1974, every editor and writer worth his or her salt should have a copy of Words into Type. The advice throughout is clear and succinct, with before and after examples aplenty. Words into Type covers many grammatical and style issues that other style books fail to address and is also far easier to use than the Chicago Manual or Follet's Modern American Usage. Every section shines; one of the highlights is the "Use of Words" section, which, like every other section, covers an enormous amount of ground and is essential reading for anyone in the business of writing or editing. I highly recommend this book; you will not be disappointed. Surprisingly little of it is out of date (mostly just the section on typography). Over and over again, I find myself turning to this book for answers to tricky questions of style or grammar. Well worth the money!

About the Author
Jan Zlotnik Schmidt, a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, who earned her BA from the University of Rochester in 1969, her MA from the University of Wisconsin in 1970, and her PhD from Syracuse University in 1977, teaches courses in composition, autobiography, creative writing, American literature, women's literature, and Holocaust studies. Her poetry has been published in many journals, including KANSAS QUARTERLY, CREAM CITY REVIEW, SYRACUSE SCHOLAR, ALASKA QUARTERLY REVIEW, HOME PLANET NEWS, and PHOEBE. She has published two volumes of poetry--WE SPEAK IN TONGUES (the Edwin Mellen Press, 1991) and SHE HAD THIS MEMORY (the Edwin Mellen Press, 2000)--and two collections of autobiographical essays--WOMEN/WRITING/TEACHING (SUNY Press, 1998) and WISE WOMEN: REFLECTIONS OF TEACHERS AT MIDLIFE, co-authored with Dr. Phyllis R. Freeman (Routledge, 2000).

Lynne Crockett is an Associate Professor and Writing Program Administrator at SUNY Sullivan, a small, two-year college in the Catskill Mountains of New York. She received her PhD in Victorian literature from New York University in 2004. Crockett writes a monthly column for the SHAWANGUNK journal in Ellenville, New York, in addition to publishing creative nonfiction.

An surprisingly enjoyable read.

This book has some great stories that span many authors and ages of our history. I have even taken the time, as a college student, to get my mom to read some of them as well. I am not someone who enjoys reading or english. I like math and computers. But this book I have found to offer a great variety of well written stories and I probably won't be selling it back. (This review has been written not by SageSeeker, but me, her daughter.)

Every child and young at heart should own this book.

While doing some Christmas shopping for holiday books for my grand daughters, I came across this book. I bought it not really knowing what it was. I am so glad that it was one of the books I chose. Great illustrations, wonderful little greeting cards and other novel things to open that the postman delivers to Red Riding Hood, Gingerbread Boy and others, tucked in pocket pages. The postman finally ends up with a visit to Santa. This book will be a repeat purchase by me as gifts for many children and "big kids" I know for years to come. It's different, clever and fun - A book that will become a tradition to read.

Even though I am already eleven years old I am still obsessed with this book. It is funny and the pictures are marvelous. I plan on buying this book for Christmas. This book is for all ages. It is about a postman who goes around delivering mail. On each page there is a little pocket that contains a message/mail. I loved reading this book and I bet you will too.

I've bought 8 of these over the past 20 years!

I bought this for my daughter and later I bought it for friends' children. I'll probably search for it for my grandchildren too. You can probably guess that I like it! Buying for kids is such fun because you get the wow factor, and then you get to see whether they really take to it by reading/playing with it. Kids don't fib about this stuff, do they! I can report 100% success. The enthusiam they have for all the hidden messages, cards, games is so sweet. This truly is a gift that grows and grows on them.

Note - if you have to get a used one, verify all the bits are included. The book wouldn't work without those.

Insightful, but limited to hackers.

I needed to write a basic driver that an application could access through standard Win32 API's - CreatFile, OpenFile, ReadFile, WriteFile, etc. While the author does indeed provide lots of samples that are easy to follow and will work, - they are limited to use for custom or special-purpose I/O access. There is no discussion about the varios types of file or IO systems and types of drivers - i.e., File System Drivers (FSD), Input/Output Supervisor (IOS), Communications (COMM), Miniport, MCI, etc. There is no discussion about how to install & register your driver properly, creation of INF files, etc. So who is this book written for? Hacks that simply want a quick way to access hardware without creating system errors. It is not for engineers that want to create an installable device driver for a common I/O devices and distribute it with their hardware so that it will work seamlessly with the operating system and other existing, professionaly written, application software. If you need to create a driver for a standard I/O device already supported by Microsoft API's, keep looking. If you have a custom i/o board and a low-level driver that can access it & handle interrupts, but plan on providing your own high-level custom API software so your customers can access it (i.e., a proprietary solution), this is for you. Good luck!

Good basic introduction on drivers for windows 95.

I sure wish I'd had this book when I started out writing drivers, it would have saved me a ton of time and grief. I too, wish there were more information on specific driver types, such as soundcards, but that stuff is in the DDK anyway, once you know what to look for -- and this book will tell you that, and a lot quicker and better than the DDK will. Any of the other required tools will tell you how to install or load a VXD, so I don't consider that a big problem. I could wish that this book also covered Windows NT, but was extemely glad for the plug and play coverage, which other information sources obfuscate badly. Good information on windows innards, useful to an overall understanding.

About the Author
James R. Evans is professor in the Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. His service includes president of the Decision Sciences Institute 1997-1998 and 11 years on the Board of Examiners and Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has been Editor of the Quality Management Journal, published by the American Society for Quality, and served on editorial boards of numerous other journals. Dr. Evans has published more than 90 refereed papers and more than 30 editions of books. During the annual Quality Congress in May 2004, The American Society for Quality presented Dr. Evans and co-author Bill Lindsay with the Philip B. Crosby Medal for writing THE MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF QUALITY, 6E. The Crosby medal was presented "for authoring a distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of the philosophy and application of the principles, methods, and techniques of quality management."

William M. Lindsay is Professor Emeritus of Management at Northern Kentucky University. He received a BSIE from the Georgia Institute of Technology, MS in Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and an MBA and Ph.D. from Georgia State University. In addition to coauthoring eight editions of MANAGING FOR QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE (including predecessors), he is the coauthor of Total Quality and Organization Development. He served as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for four years, as a judge for the Kentucky Quality Award for five years, and as a judge for the Seasongood Innovation Awards for the City of Cincinnati for three years. He is a senior member and past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Association for Quality and Participation, and is a member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), in addition to other professional organizations. He continues to teach MBA courses in quality management and project management. He is currently a Board Member of CLASP, a local nonprofit after-school program for elementary-aged children, and is an active volunteer at his church.

Long, verbose, time consuming and WORTH EVERY BIT OF IT!

Was an assigned text for an upper level university Management course. Excellent choice. The content made sense, was well written/easy to read, and continually built on earlier chapters.

It's still on my shelf as a reference I refer to often in my business. Wouldn't be without it!
