From Booklist
After waiting nearly four years since The Fiery Cross (2001), readers will find every expectation fulfilled in the sixth book of the popular Outlander series. Gabaldon shines as she unfolds the continuing story of the Frasers, heartbreakingly heroic highlander Jamie and his time-traveling wife Clare. Set during the three years leading up to the American Revolution, this compulsively readable mix of authentically set historical fiction and completely satisfying romance maps both violent loss and strong family ties. On the eve of war much is changing on Fraser's Ridge and Jamie and Claire encounter much harm. This vivid and haunting novel, therefore, brings an aching sadness, but it is balanced with sheer joy, revelation, and solace. The large scope of the novel allows Gabaldon to do what she does best, paint in exquisite detail the lives of her characters. Gabaldon's ability to invoke the heroic and the harrowing writ large, while also creating moments where you dare not take a breath for fear of missing something tiny and fine, is her hallmark. For it is in describing the sound of rain on the roof, Jamie's injured hand, or the understanding between father and daughter that the world of the novel comes alive and offers readers an enthralling experience. Review
“The sixth instalment of the adventures of Claire and Jamie Fraser, already number one on the bestseller list, is a whopping 980 pages of action-packed escapism. It also has surprisingly melancholy and insightful views on the experience of growing old and dealing with the losses that entails…. One of the things that sets Gabaldon apart from other romance writers is exhaustive research of the times in which her characters live, so evident in her attention to period detail…. plot lines and stand-alone yarns are expertly woven together with the overall theme of impending doom and the question of predetermination.” — The Toronto Star

“Fans of Diana Gabaldon’s popular Outlander series have another rousing historical-science-fiction-romance novel to savour in A Breath of Snow and Ashes…. For fans, this book is another slam-dunk hit. It’s a massive, long-lasting source of entertainment.” — The Gazette (Montreal)

Praise for Diana Gabaldon:
“Riveting. Gabaldon has a true storyteller’s voice.”—The Globe and Mail

“Triumphant. . . . Her use of historical detail and truly adult love story confirm Gabaldon as a superior writer.”—Publishers Weekly

“Diana Gabaldon is a born storyteller. . . . The pages practically turn themselves.”—Arizona Republic

"Readers will find every expectation fulfilled.... The large scope of the novel allows Gabaldon to do what she does best, paint in exquisite detail the lives of her characters."—Booklist

From the Hardcover edition.

From the Inside Flap
Eagerly anticipated by her legions of fans, this sixth novel in Diana Gabaldon's bestselling Outlander saga is a masterpiece of historical fiction from one of the most popular authors of our time.
Since the initial publication of Outlander fifteen years ago, Diana Gabaldon's "New York Times bestselling saga has won the hearts of readers the world over -- and sold more than twelve million books. Now, A Breath of Snow and Ashes continues the extraordinary story of 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century wife, Claire.
The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest.
With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence -- with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping from "The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie's death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future.

The old and great Gabaldon is back
By Ers Consulting
I was one of those many readers who loved the first four books but was harshly critical of The Fiery Cross, her fifth book. However, this book is terrific. First of all Claire and Jamie are more present in this book with all their love and passion, fierceness and courage, which had been dimly expressed in The Fiery Cross. Brianna and Roger are more believable and loving towards each other - Roger is less of a wimp, Brianna has gotten over her whinny self, and Jemmy is a terrific kid, not just a pooping, nursing machine.

Ordinarily, I am impatient of a lot of description, do a lot of skimming, and want to get down to the meat and potatoes of the plot. But not in this book. Every vignette, even if not central to the plot, is vivid and fascinating, giving the reader a glimpse into life in those days. I found myself devouring every word, enjoying the journey rather than being in a rush to the destination. Gabaldon is just such an incredible writer; such an imagination - you find it hard to believe she wasn't actually there. And when Jamie says things like "If I die, dinna follow me. The bairns will need ye. Stay for them. I can wait." I find myself crying and feeling like an idiot, since this is fiction, but it touches me so.

Enjoy!

Questions are Answered!
By Mel
If you've been waiting for certain things to be resolved . . . well, you're in luck. It was with a great deal of satisfaction that I finished this book (at 2:30 this morning), because I finally had answers to a lot of the things I'd been wondering about.

Unlike Fiery Cross, this book is much faster moving, with no long descriptions of diaper-changing. Brianna and Roger seem to have found their places at Fraser's Ridge . . . Brianna is much more likeable, much more mature, and a lot less whiny. And, of course, Claire and Jamie are featured very prominently . . . it's still their series. There's action, adventure, abduction, illness, war, and of course, sex.

A book more in the tradition of Voyager and Drums of Autumn . . . I wasn't disappointed.

An addictive addition to Gabaldon's Outlander series
By Bookreporter
Bodice-ripper romance? Check. Historical fiction with oodles of period detail? Double-check. Time-traveling fantasy? You bet. A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES (actually, all six volumes in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series) combines most of the genres I love, which means I couldn't put it down --- and at a hefty 992 pages, that's saying a lot. While immersed, I felt I was never far from Fraser's Ridge, the North Carolina homestead where Jamie Fraser, an exiled Scotsman, and his wife Claire, doctor and displaced 20th-century person, make their home. There are two other refugees from the contemporary world in the community: the Frasers' daughter Brianna (conceived in the 18th century, born in the 20th), and her husband Roger --- plus assorted saints, ruffians, eccentrics, rogues, floozies and fanatics.

Gabaldon's conceit, for those new to the books, is that certain individuals are able to pass from one century to another by means of ancient circles of standing stones. In OUTLANDER, the first volume, Claire time-travels quite by accident while vacationing in the Highlands; from 1946 she is hurtled back some 200 years, when the Jacobites, Scottish supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie, were fighting to oust the English and reestablish their own king. She meets and marries Jamie, but after the rebels are crushed at Culloden in 1745 and he is condemned to death, she returns to modern life (and her bemused 20th-century husband) to save her unborn child.

Sounds pretty crazy, but Gabaldon makes it plausible because her research is so meticulous and her characters so sympathetic: heroic, yet attractively flawed. You get to know the central quartet --- Jamie, Claire, Brianna and Roger --- especially well, since they take turns narrating the book. Okay, I'll admit that the two couples' literally timeless devotion and undying ardor (sex scenes galore!) are so idealized that lots of plot action is essential to keep the reader from becoming bored and/or skeptical: Somebody (Claire twice and Brianna once) is always getting abducted by villains and rescued by the clan.

But A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES, though a close cousin of the historical romance (think a more prolix version of Philippa Gregory), has another dimension, thanks to the sci-fi element. A modern sensibility and vision lurk within the pre-electric interiors and wild, uncharted scenery of Fraser's Ridge --- Brianna dreams of hot running water; Claire struggles with the concept that she is Jamie's property; Roger, originally an historian, looks ahead to the triumph of the revolution and the bitter fate of the Native Americans. The book reminds us how dangerous it was to be on the "right" side of the Anglo-American conflict, and how hard and labor-intensive it was to accomplish the simplest tasks of everyday life. It shows us Claire and Brianna recreating resources we take for granted, from matches to ether (Claire's medical adventures, wherein she combines contemporary knowledge with herbal traditions, is my favorite part of the series; in this volume she handles a breech birth, fixes a twisted hand, and treats syphilis with a home-grown form of penicillin). The women characters are not only amazingly strong, but also possess a feminist consciousness that they bring to bear on an impressive number of unwed pregnancies and other local scandals. And always the modern refugees are wondering whether there are other time-travelers like themselves --- whether, in fact, every invention is really a reinvention by people from the future.

The temporal ambiguity of the book also gives it emotional depth. All the characters, time-travelers or political exiles, have a feeling of displacement and a deep longing for the home they've parted from. Jamie, contemplating the "glorious, terrifying" emptiness of the land, becomes aware of a "more terrifying emptiness within": He "had said good-bye to Scotland at the rail of the Artemis, knowing full well it was likely his last sight of the place. And yet the notion that he would never set foot there again had never fully settled on him 'til this moment."' Our stories of pioneers and immigrants have passed into myth, so it is easy to forget how much courage it took to break with the old and familiar and sail off to a whole new continent.

A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES isn't great literature. It's way, way too long; full of breathless prose, cornball archaic language, and Gaelic phrases; easy to make fun of or relegate to the status of guilty pleasure. And yet, there is something so honest, rich and complete about the alternative worlds Gabaldon creates that I think she is a kind of genius. I can't wait to find out what happens next in the story of the Frasers and their kin (the end is quite a cliffhanger).

If you're already addicted to Claire and Jamie, this review probably isn't even necessary. But for Outlander "virgins," I have some advice: Pick up a copy of THE OUTLANDISH COMPANION, Gabaldon's handbook to the series, which includes not only synopses of the first few books but also family trees, character analyses, research minutiae, a Gaelic glossary and grammar, and more --- all the insider info a hardcore fan could want and a newcomer could need.

Classical Art: From Greece to Rome (Oxford History of Art), by Mary Beard, John Henderson

The stunning masterpieces of Ancient Greece and Rome are fundamental to the story of art in Western culture and to the origins of art history. The expanding Greek world of Alexander the Great had an enormous impact on the Mediterranean superpower of Rome. Generals, rulers, and artists seized, imitated, and re-thought the stunning legacy of Greek painting and sculpture, culminating in the greatest art-collector the world had ever seen: the Roman emperor Hadrian.

This exciting new look at Classical art starts with the excavation of the buried city of Pompeii, and investigates the grandiose monuments of ancient tyrants, and the sensual beauty of Apollo and Venus. Concluding with that most influential invention of all, the human portrait, it highlights the re-discovery of Classical art in the modern world, from the treasure hunts of Renaissance Rome to scientific retrieval of artworks in the twenty-first century.

Review

"This is no conventional book on Classical Art, but a critique of Greek art through Roman eyes, analyzing the complexity of the Romans' reception of Greek pictorial and sculptural 'masterpieces,' most of which are only known today through their Roman versions."--Richard Brilliant, Columbia University

"Innovative, challenging, and never dull, this is a bracing departure from the norm. Readers will welcome its strong thesis and trenchant refusal to take received wisdom on trust."--Andrew Stewart, University of California, Berkeley

Superb!
By David Kimel
This innovative and deliciously illustrated guide to the arts of Greece and Rome is composed in a light-hearted, humorous vein and provides as much entertainment as artistic edification. Furthermore, its unique exploration of Greek art through the prism of Roman culture offers a refreshing new perspective on the development of the wildly influential high classicism of the empire. In short, a delightful and beautiful book.

This is a good book, well written and for the general reader. But the print book has color images. The black and white of the kindle version is a real disappointment.

Disappointing and almost unreadable in Kindle sample
By Amazon Customer
I started reading this in the hope that it would be a lively and accessible introduction. The writing style is fine but the sample on my Kindle was most disappointing as not only were the illustrations black and white but both the pictures and captions were incredibly difficult to see rendering the discussion of them incomprehensible! As I am using a recent Kindle Fire HD, it shouldn't be the fault of the device. I certainly wouldn't buy the Kindle edition and am hesitant about getting the print edition. What a shame!

Cartesian Linguistics: A Chapter in the History of Rationalist Thought, by Noam Chomsky

In this extraordinarily original and profound work, Noam Chomsky discusses themes in the study of language and mind since the end of the sixteenth century in order to explain the motivations and methods that underlie his work in linguistics, the science of mind, and even politics. This edition includes a new and specially written introduction by James McGilvray, contextualising the work for the twenty-first century. It has been made more accessible to a larger audience; all the French and German in the original edition has been translated, and the notes and bibliography have been brought up to date. The relationship between the original edition (published in 1966) and contemporary biolinguistic work is also explained. This challenging volume is an important contribution to the study of language and mind, and to the history of these studies since the end of the sixteenth century.

Cognitive Revolution Before The 20th Century
By Philonous
This is a great book for someone who is interested in how Chomsky's theory of language acquisition and syntax are influenced by a series of philosophers from Descartes to Humboldt, which Chomsky calls the "Cartesian Linguistics". In fact, I would recommend it to anyone, especially non-linguists, so nobody has to be intimidated by a false impression that Cartesian Linguistics is a technical book for professional linguists. Chomsky picks out many interesting philosophical views from Descartes, Post-Royal, Humboldt, and others to give his readers at least three main ideas: First, there were philosophers and linguists before Chomsky who not only anticipated the cognitive revolution but also initiated it before it had to be revived again in the 20th century by Chomsky and others. Second, philosophers such as Descartes, Post-Royale, and Humboldt already knew some properties of language before Chomsky did. Descartes and Humboldt were very much aware of the creative aspect of language to generate an infinite set of sentences arranged in infinite ways that are still grammatical. Post-Royal were implicitly aware of the distinction between surface and deep structure as they point out that an uttered sentence is in fact composed of several propositions that are synthesized by some rule (which Chomsky called Transformational Rules) to get to the surface sentence. Most of these philosophers were also aware that how language is acquired is not through complete learning or by analogy, but rather exposure to some external stimulus that activates innate and universal principles of language. Lastly, Chomsky tries to argue how the past linguistic tradition (Cartesian Linguistics) is still very valuable, important, and relevant to modern linguistics.

I really enjoyed this book, I think it is very profound, but I only have at least two *minor* criticisms to make. First, Chomsky wrote a lot of the essential ideas from Cartesian Linguistics in his other later book called Language and Mind, specifically a chapter called Linguistic Contribution to the Study of Mind: Past. You may not find all of it in that chapter, but most of the essential ones are there: He talks about Descartes, Humboldt, and Post-Royale. So, for those who already read Language and Mind, reading this book may not seem very necessary unless you like to read Chomsky's book for its own sake. Second, Cartesian Linguistics is pretty short, apart from a long introduction written by Chomsky's colleague, it barely reaches 100 pages. One would wish that Chomsky could have written more, but perhaps this is all Chomsky could do for now since much philosophical works on language relevant to Chomsky's Universal Grammar is pretty hard to find.

Nonetheless, despite these minor criticisms, reading the book Cartesian Linguistics is not a waste of time.

A good perspective
By Rafed A. Khashan
This book provides a very good background to understand how Linguistics strove to edge its way into science. It provides a background that puts things into perspective and makes one understand issues in linguistics that are far beyond what the book proposes to tell.

The Quintessential Paradigm Shifter. A timeless classic... ONCE.... NOW.... FOREVER.
By thinking atheist
What can you say about this book? This is beyond a classic! This is the kind of work that comes out once in a century, and pulls the carpet out from under everything we ever assumed about our discipline. Know this, if you have not read this book, you are NO LINGUIST, no matter how many degrees you have, or how many grants you have received.

By Ms. Jacquelyn Clarke
This was a good basic guideline for understanding the biblical principles of how god speaks through dreams. I was hoping for more guidance on how to receive interpretation from God for the dreams we have. Dreams vary greatly and are often very personal to the dreamer, so while the interpretations in the book were useful i have had many experiences in dreams which were not presented in the book. Maybe a part two to provide more information on how to address Heaven for help interpreting your dreams.

If you have dreams you don't understand this book will help you.
By Amazon Customer
If I leaned nothing from this book I learned not to take eating in dreams lightly or sexual dreams. I have seen how the devil use my dreams to attack me when I am not conscious of what is going on. I now guard my dreams and learn to destroy anything I did not gain victory over when I was a sleep after I awake. It is a very resouceful book on dream understanding.

Great introductory book for the uninitiated student!
By mcox@apostles.org
This book covers the major approaches to ethical decision making. It is in-depth, but not overly technical in nature. This is perhaps its greatest value, as it allows the novice student to become familiar with the major lines of discussion within the discipline without burdening them with some of the more intricate discussions that are more difficult. EXCELLENT study questions at the end of each chapter are another plus. Though I ultimately disagree with the authors conclusions as to how best to approach the study of ethics; I do, nevertheless appreciate the irenic spirit in which the material is covered. I am a Professor of Philosophy and Systematic Theology at a conservative bible college. Given the differences in worldview perspective,I still found myself in agreement with his assesments of most of the approaches covered. I do, of course, disagree with many of the conclusions Hinman draws in respect to his chapter on Religious Ethics (divine command theory) Still, I would suggest this book to fellow educators as a balanced and irenic introductory text regardless of ones religious committment.

Learn Ancient Greek (Greek and Latin Language), by Peter Jones

Based on the same principles as Learn Latin, Peter Jones's bestselling book of the hugely popular Daily Telegraph series, this book teaches you enough Greek in 20 chapters to be able to read some real ancient Greek – one of the world's greatest languages, used by one of the world's greatest cultures. By the end of the course you will be able to read passages from the New Testament and from Classical Greek literature, including extracts from Socrates' speech on trial for his life recorded by Plato, Sophocles' Antigone, and the tragic end to the Athenian expedition to Sicily described by the historian Thucydides – and much else.

Each chapter also comes with sections on ancient Greek history and culture, and on the influence of the ancient language on our own, enabling you to experience at first hand just why it is that the ancient Greeks have played such a central part in the culture, language and history of western civilisation.

so so
By Furio
Some reviews about this handbook sound quite enthusiastic, a few do not.

First of all, I should like to make clear that I am not new to studying ancient and modern languages, both by myself or with a teacher.

I have decided to take up Greek seriously (a long standing wish) on my own to give my passion for historical lingustics a sounder basis and I bought several British and American textbooks as there is no self study material in Italian.

There is no doubt about Dr Jones being competent, that is wholly out of question. I like his humour too, his light hearted way of illustrating grammar as if it were real fun: I may be a linguist in the core but I find learning declensions by heart just a little more easy than a common high school pupil would therefore heartily welcoming any device that can make things more palatable.

Up to chapter five (included) things are just fine. I do not like (well, I abhor) the leaving the accents aside, but this is very common way in Anglo-american textbooks: I see no reason why it should be so but so it is and one cannot blame Dr Jones too much for doing just the same.
Accents aside, learning is easy and entertaining and you really get the impression of making the most of your time.

From chapter six things get sticky. Grammar is still nicely illustrated but the examples and excercises are no longer up to the task of making you learn what has been so entertainingly explained. Reasoning leads one near to nowhere: one must begin learning by heart and doing the (few) excercises again and again in the attempt of memorizing vocabulary and constructions.

An even stickier problem is the choice of readings. Probably in the attempt of confronting his reader with real texts to awaken his/her interest, Dr Jones is just too eager in introducing nearly unadulterated Greek passages.
Such passages must be preceded by discouragingly long vocabulary lists not to mention the fact that this vocabulary is seldom useful later on; this is why I took no pleasure in reading Thucidides or Socrates as boasted on the book cover.

A minor but irritating fault is the lack of answer key translation for those readings taken from the New Testament. "Use your Bible" is not satisfactory for someone who wishes a self contained handbook, not to mention that there are several translations of the Bible and that, for the purpose of learning, a literal if unattractive translation could be of more use than the usual ones.

In my opinion one could use the first chapters of this book to break the ice but should go on with a different text or be prepared for a lot of self imposed supplementary work.

Keeps it lively and fun
By David V. Ready
Peter Jones makes a potentially dry subject a great deal of fun. He weaves his dry sense of humor into the lessons, with the occasional anachronistic pun thrown in there for good effect. I really love his teaching style.

I have just finished the work and can now read Greek at the elementary level (Jan 29 2010)

Great for learning and review
By Cade
I have the earlier 1999 printing of this book, and have recently gone back and worked through it again for a review of the basics. I'm well studied in French, German and Latin, using more "formal" books for those languages. I regret that I didn't use Jones' Latin book (although I'm contemplating getting it just for the fun of it), and that there aren't comparable texts for modern languages!

Jones is not only an entertaining teacher (even in print), but a wise one. As other reviewers have said, he organizes otherwise daunting information in small, easily grasped nuggets. He also keeps the pace moving along, so that the self-study doesn't become laborious. It does get a little more difficult midway through: after chapter 11, you'll find yourself multitasking with reviewing (so not to forget) past vocabulary and grammar, tackling new material, and trying not to get frustrated with increasingly more complex exercises. Yet fret not, as Jones makes this inevitable hump in learning any language as easy and accessible as possible (mind you, he warns us of this challenge at the start).

My only gripe, which isn't really a bad one, is that I found both times through the book that once I got past chapter 13, I actually wanted more exercises and more reading segments. Somehow, I felt a little in disbelief that I had actually covered very much and wanted the reassurance. However, despite seeming "lightweight" by comparison to other texts, the book does cover a significant amount of essential Greek vocabulary and grammar that any beginner needs. The first time through, I found I was able to read many Greek texts with the only a lexicon for unfamiliar vocabulary. The second time through, I was even more impressed with how pithy and fun yet thorough the text is, which made it not just a great introductory text, but the prefect method for review.
