How to take good notes: The science behind note taking, by Angelos Georgakis

“Why would I need a book on how to take notes? Notes are just notes; they’re not a big deal”. “At the end of the day, everyone has their own way to take notes.” “Anyway, no one taught me how to take notes in school or in college.” “It comes naturally.” “I feel like I always knew how to take notes! It’s just notes. It’s not rocket science!”

“Notes are just notes.” FALSE. Scientists have found that note taking can be as mentally demanding as playing chess can be for an expert. While you take notes, you listen carefully to the lecturer, you process the new material, you organize it in your working memory, and you finally write down what you think is most important. All this happens while someone is talking at an average speed of three words per second and someone is writing down at an average speed of one-third of a word per second. It doesn’t sound easy now, does it?

Notes are an important tool for learning. We don’t take notes just to record a few facts so we can review them later. Learning happens as we take notes. Taking notes the right way leads to good study practices, better performance on exams, and long-term retention of information.

“It comes naturally.” FALSE. Note taking is not obvious or intuitive. Research has shown that students fail to capture 40% of the main points in a typical lecture. First-year students capture only 11%. In some studies, even the best note takers seem to record less than 75% of the important information. People think they take good notes until they’re told they don’t. Few of us have consciously thought about how we take notes (let alone how to improve the quality of them). We often reproduce the lecturer’s phrases verbatim. We don’t save time by systematic use of abbreviations. We fail to become a “good psychologist” of our lecturer. We fail to pick up his enthusiasm. We fail to interpret the tone of his voice. We fail to read his body language. And the result is that we fail to take good notes.

“Anyway, no one taught me how to take notes in school or in college.” TRUE. Educators believe that students are able to assess the quality of their notes and follow good practices. However, studies have shown the exact opposite. The fact that there isn’t a course in college dedicated to the art of taking notes (or learning in general) makes students believe that this is a natural skill that they can perfect with practice over the course of their studies.

“At the end of the day, everyone has their own way to take notes.” TRUE. In this book, you may be surprised to learn that I don’t make any references to different types of note-taking systems like those that other books do. The reason is that it’s the practices behind the note taking that matter most. For example, you should not copy the lecturer’s phrases word for word, but generate the main points in your own words. And you should leave space on your notes for adding comments and testing yourself later. I encourage students to use the Cornell note-taking system because it utilizes most of the principles of effective note taking. No matter which note-taking system you decide to follow, the cognitive effort you will have to expend is equally high.

Note taking may not be rocket science, but it’s definitely science—cognitive science. And cognitive science has produced a lot of useful insights that we can use now to take better notes. This book presents these insights in simple words, so you can make the most of your notes and use them to study effectively.

The title of this book is How to take good notes. However, note taking is just one part of the picture. Note taking is much broader in the context of this book. We take notes so we can interact with them later. What matters most is what we do with our notes after we finish taking them. So if you want to

Notes can do so many good things for you. They hold all your learning efforts. Treat them well. Look after them.

The Way of the Cell: Molecules, Organisms, and the Order of Life, by Franklin M. Harold

What is life? Fifty years after physicist Erwin Schrodinger posed this question in his celebrated and inspiring book, the answer remains elusive. In The Way of the Cell, one of the world's most respected microbiologists draws on his wide knowledge of contemporary science to provide fresh insight into this intriguing and all-important question.
What is the relationship of living things to the inanimate realm of chemistry and physics? How do lifeless but special chemicals come together to form those intricate dynamic ensembles that we recognize as life? To shed light on these questions, Franklin Harold focuses here on microorganisms--in particular, the supremely well-researched bacterium E. coli--because the cell is the simplest level of organization that manifests all the features of the phenomenon of life. Harold shows that as simple as they appear when compared to ourselves, every cell displays a dynamic pattern in space and time, orders of magnitude richer than its elements. It integrates the writhings and couplings of billions of molecules into a coherent whole, draws matter and energy into itself, constructs and reproduces its own order, and persists in this manner for numberless generations while continuously adapting to a changing world.
A cell constitutes a unitary whole, a unit of life, and in this volume one of the leading authorities on the cell gives us a vivid picture of what goes on within this minute precinct. The result is a richly detailed, meticulously crafted account of what modern science can tell us about life as well as one scientist's personal attempt to wring understanding from the tide of knowledge.

Amazon.com Review
"What is life?" asked physicist Edwin Schrödinger in an influential essay by that title published half a century ago. In this book, Franklin Harold ventures no definitive answers about what he calls "the supreme marvel of the universe." Instead, with wit and learning, he surveys the advances in scientific understanding about the nature of life since Schrödinger's time.

Harold focuses closely on microorganisms, which, he observes, do not often figure in popular books of biology, perhaps because most general readers associate them only with disease and not with their many beneficial contributions to the world's workings. In fact, he suggests, the answer to Schrödinger's question is likely to be found at the microscopic level. Current evolutionary models derived from the study of ribosomal RNA from hundreds of species of plants and animals now point to the development of life from some cenancestor in a setting billions of years old, one in which "microorganisms rather than dinosaurs fill the horizon." The identity of that ancestor is not yet known, he writes; it may have resembled a bacterium, or it may have been a loosely organized assemblage of protocells "engaged in the promiscuous exchange of genetic information."

No matter what it looked like, Harold notes in this instructive survey of modern biological theory, life probably originated in an apparently inhospitable environment, as studies of deep-ocean thermal vents and the lithosphere now point to, rather than in the oceanic "chemical stew" of old. It's a fascinating story, and Harold tells it ably. --Gregory McNamee

From Booklist
Nothing concentrates the mind like tackling the largest of questions (What is life?) within the smallest of settings (the cell). In achieving this concentration, Harold invites general readers to join him on the very frontier of biological research, there to ponder the multilayered dynamics of the animate world. Though technical enough to discourage the casual browser, this explication of the inner workings of a humble bacterium initiates readers in just enough science to permit a serious engagement with fundamental theoretical questions: Where, for instance, does a strictly genetic approach to life lead us astray? Or, why must we invoke autopoiesis--and not just natural selection--in explaining biological order? Nonspecialists will find themselves richly rewarded for a little patience in following the careful and lucid answers to these and other fundamental questions. For Harold has cleared a path deep into the perplexities now confronting biological theorists. And with rare candor, he acknowledges when those perplexities push us to the limit of science, leaving us to wonder and guess. A work of marvelous penetration and scope. Bryce Christensen

Review

"The work is like a breath of fresh air in a scientific world otherwise obsessed with excessive reductionism."--BioEssays

"Witty and erudite, this scientific book hails as a literary achievement. Comprehensive and up to date, Franklin Harold traces the roots--historical, thermodynamic, and biochemical--of today's biological revolution."--Lynn Margulis, co-author (with Dorion Sagan) of both What is Life? and What is Sex?

"This book helps us understand why the search for answers to the riddle 'What is life?' is a noble quest."--Howard C. Berg, author of Random Walks in Biology

Superb natural philosophy of life with very current science
By Todd I. Stark
This is an excellent book of detailed biological philosophy that is often a sheer delight to read. I guess the best comparison I can think of off the top of my head is to Lewis Thomas' thought provoking "Lives of a Cell," but with extremely current science. This is particularly welcome in these days when we are being inundated with the pros and cons of genetics, the emphasis here is off of the genome itself and onto its role in constructing the cell and bringing life into being.
The cell is, to put it simply, the basic unit of life. This beautifully written book investigates the principles of what science knows about the cell, and also their limits. In so doing, it also investigates much of what we know about life. While it gets very detailed at times, it is still quite readable by educated non-specialists.
"Way of the Cell" makes judicious and consistent use of current state of the art principles such as self-organization, self-assembly, and the dynamics of far from equillibrium reactions, yet it doesn't get carried away with them. This book remains solidly rooted to science throughout, even when it probes the boundaries of what we know of the complex processes in living cells.
We are treated to several very interesting, measured, and contemporary accounts of the relationship of form and function, and how cells construct themselves. The author is very much a lyrical poet of nature philosophy as well as a serious biochemist. There are also a number of insights into the history and critical observations of biological science, but the book never becomes history-heavy. It is always foremost a book of wonderment at what science tells us about life.
There is a unique discussion of the origins of life, concluding that the answer lies in the utterly remote past, but with remarkable candor admitting that without novel and powerful methods of historical inquiry, we soon reach a limit to what we can discover about it with much certainty. This is followed by an epilogue about the meaning of life, and the author's personal view that science must remain silent on matters of morality.
This is a book that brings evolution, thermodynamics, information theory, developmental biology, cell biology, and genetics into close and comfortable conjunction, and even a fair degree of synthesis in spots. There are many profound insights here to be gleaned, and even more distinctive new perspectives on old ideas. There is an awful lot of "new wine in old bottles" here in the way the authors approach each topic. There are very few extremes or excessive claims here to criticize, it just all fits together wonderfully.
This is a book that will be particularly appreciated by those who enjoy Lynn Margulis' "system" perspective on organisms, but I think it should be read by anyone interested in deep questions of the nature of life from the perspective of science.

Difficult, profound; worth the reader's best efforts
By Dennis Littrell
Time and again in this dense, intensely scientific exposition on cellular life, Professor Harold expresses his dissatisfaction with what he calls the "genocentric" view of life. Instead he would like to see a "focus on the cellular templet rather than the molecular gene." He believes this would represent "a significant divergence from the genocentric conception of life that now dominates the scientific literature and even more so, the popular press." (p. 100) Harold makes a strong case for his point of view; indeed, it is this book more than any other that has made me see the overriding influence the immediate molecular environment has on reproduction and growth.
The genome has its "recipe," its code of instructions, but what Harold is at pains to tell us is that without the four-dimensional cellular environment in which the gene's "instructions" are carried out in a step-by-step process, there would be no growth or reproduction.
What this means is that the shape and temperature, the position and abundance of the surrounding cellular elements themselves shape the genetic expression as much as or even more than the genome. All life comes from life. All cells come from cells. There is no acting out of the genetic code outside a cellular environment.
And so we see Harold's frustration and that of other molecular biologists at all the hoopla that has accompanied the sequencing of the genome when it is clear that reading the code is just a very small step toward understanding how the cell reproduces itself and grows. What we need to understand is the intricate environment of the cell and how it interacts with the code leading to the epigenetic assembly of the cell and ultimately of the organism. The complications inherent in such an enterprise are truly mind-boggling in the extreme. Analysis of the four-dimensional factors would overwhelm the fastest computers in existence--all of them at the same time--if somehow we could figure out how to employ them to aid our analysis.
These facts explain why scientists like Harold are insistent upon a holistic approach to biology and why they again and again warn about the limitations of a reductionist approach. Life is just too complicated to be understood by breaking it down into pieces and attempting to put it back together, or to reverse engineer it.
On page 213 there is an interesting comparison of E. O. Wilson's view that there is "progress" in evolution and Stephen J. Gould's emphatic view that there is not. Harold seems to be implying that because organisms have become more complex that there is indeed at least "direction" in evolution. I would go further than this and observe that the rise of complex culture-bearing organisms like humans, who may be able to protect their home planet from a death-dealing meteor, implies if not "progress" in evolution, something equally agreeable. However, I would not say that our rise was inevitable. Indeed, along with Gould I would call it a contingency.
Much of the book, especially chapters three through eight, is a technical exploration of the microbial world of the cell using concepts and terminology not readily accessible to the lay reader. Harold is aware of this, at least for Chapter 4, "Molecular Logic," where he writes on page 35, "...students of biochemistry will find little in [the chapter]...that is new to them, but for the layman it may be like sipping water from a firehose." (!) Professor Harold provides a glossary, but one suspects one is out of one's depth when the words searched for are not in the glossary, but can be found in an ordinary dictionary!
Nonetheless the broad outlines of Harold's message can be discerned without appreciating fully the intricacies of cell metabolism and development. The introductory chapters, "Schrödinger's Riddle" and "The Quality of Life" explore the question that physicist Erwin Schrödinger famously asked in his much admired little book, What Is Life? (1944), a book that very much impressed the young Franklin Harold. In the closing chapters, beginning with Chapter 9 "By Descent with Modification," and especially the engaging Chapter 10 "So What is Life?", Harold looks more generally at evolution. He touches on the new science of complexity and how it relates to biology, and on the thermodynamics of ecosystems and how that affects natural selection. His treatment of some of the controversies in evolutionary theory is both illuminating and balanced, so much so that one would like to quote whole passages. This is obviously a subject Professor Harold has thought long and hard about for many years. Here are some examples of his thought:
"...[F]orm is not directly or rigidly determined by the genotype: the genes define a range within which the phenotype falls, but forms arise epigenetically as the result of developmental processes." (p. 209)
"Organisms are historical creatures, the products of evolution; we should not expect to deduce all their properties from universal laws." (p. 218)
"What we lack is an understanding of the principles that ultimately make living organisms living, and in their absence we cannot hope to integrate the phenomenon of life into the familiar framework of physical law. I am not here to advocate a veiled vitalism, nor to sneak in a creator by the back door. But...until we have forged rational links between the several domains of science, our understanding of life will remain incomplete and even superficial." (p. 218)
"...[W]hile a machine implies a machine maker, an organism is a self-organizing entity." (p. 220)
"Organisms process matter and energy as well as information; each represents a dynamic node in a whirlpool of several currents, and self-reproduction is a property of the collective, not of genes.... DNA is a peculiar sort of software, that can only be correctly interpreted by its own unique hardware.... [S]ending aliens the genome of a cat is no substitute for sending the cat itself--complete with mice." (p. 221)

Eloquent tribute to the mystique of Biology.
By Luigi Fernandez
The way of the cell is the way of life, for the cell is the structural unit of all living organisms on Earth. And Franklin Harold comes close to defining life in a manner that is all-encompassing, concise, and eloquent. Any person who has taken a Biology class should not have a problem with the book, although many times the author uses terminology that does not get defined at the same time, in which case, the reader has to have a good background in Cell Biology or has to browse the glossary.
Harold's eloquence is remarkable. Consider the following quotes:
1. "Over time functional systems would have "crystallized" into successful configurations, and therefore become less receptive to the import of novelty..."
2. "The genetic free-trade zone fragmented into protected enclaves, not abruptly but gradually on a time-scale of millions of years..."
3. "...leaving a huge lacuna in any account of cell evolution, but fostering a crop of stimulating conjectures."
4. "Molecular phylogenists, who draw their opinions from the bedrock of gene sequences, view the matter somewhat differently but still in a glass, darkly."
5. "The better part of valor may be to sit tight and await the tide of new data, but only dullards are proof against the temptations of myth-making."
6. "There is a fine air of whimsy, about those imaginative tales ...They also stop insouciantly around patches of quicksand, such as what brought about early cellular fusions that are not permitted to contemporary prokaryotes..."
7. "The profusion that came after is built like a fugue upon the deep theme of eukaryotic order."
8. "On the outer banks of science, one often suspects that the believer is happy while the doubter is wise; and yet, too critical a spirit is apt to overlook the genuine contribution that complexity studies have already made."
9. "The rocky path from RNA replicators to DNA genes and from catalytic RNA to protein enzymes calls for stout boots and a good head for heights."
This makes for engrossing reading, as the mystique of Biology can be overlooked when the text is dry and scholarly. There is delight, however, in reading Harold, similar to what the reader can get from Stephen Jay Gould, Richard Dawkins, and Stuart Kauffman, to name a few. I can imagine Harold entertaining his audience in a seminar with his penchant for combining words elegantly.
Today I was in a seminar where a famous molecular biologist (also a cancer biologist) admitted to a sabotage against the reductionist agenda as more scientists begin to realize that life processes cannot be just explained by the panoply of bioorganic molecules, proteins especially, and the genes that encode them. Harold fiercely stresses that DNA, for all the glorification that it deserves, is not all there is. New properties emerge as biological molecules find themselves in different cellular compartments and environments, at different stages in the development of the organism, and as the organisms themselves explore all possibilities of trading and swapping genes, and even fusing their entire bodies in one. Read this book, and be enveloped by the biological mystique!

Bring it Back!
By Steve Mcconnell
Why on earth has this book gone out of print? It is the best, many say "only", acting text an actor needs. Nowhere else are the essential elements of acting (such as; "private audience"; cybernetic approach; cognitive dissonance; style as action; "what for" replacing "why"; relacom victory; the myth of character) revealed for the student actor to know, believe and use. The quotes throughout by respected working professionals are priceless. The first edition in 1978 got it absolutely right. This is an acting text for the 21st century and it is criminal that today's theatre students are unable to access it.

Simply the Best
By sean
The above reviewer was probably an acting student at The Boston Conservatory. There, the standard text for senior year is Acting Power. That aside, the reviewer is correct. The book is the best you'll ever read on the techniques of acting. Forget Uta, forget Stanislavski, this book puts you in the mindset that what your scene objectives are are playable. You don't worry about what's behind you, you focus on what's ahead. Read the book and you'll see what I mean. Having written that, realize that you cannot really learn to act from a book. You have to work at it. This book just helps you come from a realistic standpoint.

A Definitive Approach to Acting
By Sharon
As a lifelong actor, director, theatre major, and Drama teacher, I have been exposed to numerous texts attempting to clarify the actor's process for the actor. Fortunately, I discovered Mr.Cohen's definitive work, "Acting Power", and it changed the way that I taught acting from that day on...

Presented in an easy to grasp vocabulary, with a logical flow of ideas that can empower the acting student from beginner to advanced, "Acting Power" is the foundation for solid, honest interpretation. An ideal gift for anyone considering acting as a profession, a college emphasis, or as an artistic expression (regardless of the venue)!

The Spiral Notebook: The Aurora Theater Shooter and the Epidemic of Mass Violence Committed

On July 20, 2012, twelve people were killed and fifty-eight wounded at a mass shooting in a movie theater in Colorado. In 1999, thirteen kids at Columbine High School were murdered by their peers. In 2012, twenty children and seven adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary. Thirty-two were killed at Virginia Tech. Twelve killed at the Washington Navy Yard. In May 2014, after posting a YouTube video of ‘retribution” and lamenting a life of “loneliness, rejection, and unfulfilled desires,” a lone gunman killed six and wounded seven in Isla Vista. All of these acts of violence were committed by young men between the ages of eighteen and thirty.

Mass violence committed by young people is now an epidemic. In the first fourteen school days of 2014, there were seven school shootings, compared to twenty-eight school shootings in all of 2013. The reasons behind this escalating violence, and the cultural forces that have impugned a generation, is the subject of the important new book The Spiral Notebook.

New York Times-bestselling author Stephen Singular has often examined violence in America in his critically-acclaimed books. Here he has teamed with his wife Joyce for their most important work yet — one that investigates why America keeps producing twenty-something mass killers. Their reporting has produced the most comprehensive look at the Aurora shooting yet and draws upon the one group left out of the discussion of violence in America: the twenty-somethings themselves.

While following the legal proceedings in the Aurora shooting, The Spiral Notebook is full of interviews with Generation Z, a group dogged by big pharma and anti-depressants and ADHD drugs, by a doomsday/apocalyptic mentality present since birth, and by an entertainment industry that has turned violence into parlor games.

Provocative and eye-opening, The Spiral Notebook is a glimpse into the forces that are shaping the future of American youth, an entire generation bathed in the violence committed by their peers.

Review
Praise for The Spiral Notebook

"The Singulars are able and enthusiastic reporters, providing detailed depictions of the event, the lead-up to it, the emergency response, and then, to their frustration, a judicial process assiduously withheld from the prying eyes of the media."—Brooklyn Rail

"The Singulars offer a harrowing look at the crime and the courtroom drama. They explore the complex legal battles, particularly over the issue of Holmes' sanity and a spiral notebook that might hold the key to determining his state of mind… This is a compelling look at gun control, mental-health treatment, and the underlying social issues that contribute to rising violence, especially that committed by young men, in our nation."—Booklist Starred Review

"[A] disturbing yet fascinating treatise on the impacts of growing up in a world that previous generations would barely recognize....Tragic, gripping, and authentic, this book deserves a wide audience."—Kirkus Starred Review

Praise for Talked to Death

“The book works at every level, from melodrama to murder mystery to sociology. Singular has much to tell us here, and all of it is disturbing.” —Philadelphia Inquirer

“Mr. Singular offers a microcosm lesson in the workings of a violently racist mind… It is the story of how broadcast communications is evolving in our era and what it has cost us.” —New York Times

“A chilling examination of American-born right-wing terrorism.” —Chicago Tribune

Praise for Presumed Guilty: An Investigation into the JonBenet Ramsey Case, the Media, and the Culture of Pornography

“Veteran crime journalist Singular offers an original perspective on the sadly epochal killing of JonBenet Ramsey… He focuses on the carnivorous mode of the mass media, particularly their lurid, immediate indictment of the Ramsey parents. Singular’s perceptive exploration of the near-universal call for the Ramseys’ heads reveals the gritty power struggles and class schisms that underlie the shiny, comforting facade of the Boulder region. Unlike his dirt-chasing peers, he gives nuanced attention to an unsettling aspect of the case that he considers overlooked yet central: the gray area in which the mainstreamed commodification of children’s sexuality collides with the abuse of child pornography… Without fully lighting the dark corners of an unappealing realm, Singular has produced a balanced, detailed, thoughtful
consideration of an incident usually reduced to cultural dissonance.” —Kirkus Reviews

“The best writing about the Colorado murder case.” —USA Today

“Novel, interesting, and a great read… Presumed Guilty opens the Ramsey case to a larger phenomenon [and] a shocking, disturbing aspect of American life.” —The New York Post

“Presumed Guilty is as close to the truth as we’ll ever get in this baffling case.” —The Arizona Daily Star

People my age aren’t taught anything about how to deal with their emotions. They don’t have any background for this and many don’t have any grounding in morality or spirituality. A lot of males of my generation have been raised without fathers. They try to act as if this doesn’t bother or affect them, but it does. They’re insecure about it, but never talk about that. They don’t have male role models who can show them how to behave not just physically, but emotionally. Or their fathers are so caught up in their work that they never take the time to do this. How do you deal with anger or fear when it comes up inside of you? How do you manage yourself when something deeply upsets or hurts you? If you don’t have a parent, especially one of your own gender, to look to for this kind of guidance, it makes it doubly hard to grow up. In the absence of these role models, what do you have? Action characters in video games and movies.

The Spiral Notebook
By Brendan Moody
This is an odd hybrid: half a conventional true crime account of the Aurora theater shooting, half a reflection on the causes of mass shootings more generally. The former is solid, unexceptionable work of its type, hampered only by the facts that the trial is ongoing and that the title document, written by James Holmes and possibly revealing his psychological state, remains unavailable to the general public. There's a tetchy quality to the authors' discussion of the delays and secrecy surrounding the trial. A cynic might attribute this to frustration that they've been following the case for years and have only gotten half a book out of it, but that would be unfair. The Singulars want a speedy resolution, I think, because they imagine that the completion of the trial and the revelation of the notebook's contents will explain the Aurora shooting, and provide answers to the larger question of why such things happen. But I'm not sure that's true, and that disagreement cuts to the heart of my issues with this well-intentioned, thoughtful book.

Two members of the Singular family are credited as authors of The Spiral Notebook, but the writers' son Eric is also a major influence. In the aftermath of the Aurora shooting, the family engaged in a conversation about how contemporary society has shaped and warped people of Eric's generation. Let's be clear: it's great that they had this dialogue, and it's great that it gave the family a greater sense that they understood and appreciated each other. But the degree to which Eric's personal influences and opinions have shaped this book's treatment of an entire generation is a problem. The meaning of alternative media to "millenials" is a valuable subject, but why talk about Vice in particular, except that it's what Eric happens to know? I'm aware that a lot of guys think, like Eric, that Fight Club is a big deal, but then a lot of us don't. A breathless and initially baffling late chapter on the intriguing but tentative possible benefits of yoga and mindfulness because clearer when we learn that Eric Singular has taken up the practice. Scattered quotes from interviews with others in his age group give an impression of a wider focus, but one suspects they've been carefully chosen to reflect the things the authors have already decided are important.

One of the many commendable aspects of The Spiral Notebook is that its social critique is wide-ranging. Gun control, mental health, bullying, foreign policy, economic stability: there's barely an aspect of modern American life that the Singulars don't take issue with. But trying to tackle all of that in half of a 318-page book means that there isn't much room for argumentation or nuance. Apart from scattered citation of statistics about the rise of mass violence and the increase in heavy use of psychoactive drugs, the authors tend to assert rather than argue, which will have many readers nodding at certain points, shaking their head at others, and rarely being persuaded to look at the subject in a new way. Personally, I found myself most frustrated by the authors' perception of my own generation as uniquely disillusioned and out of touch with the beliefs of the wider society. Young people must always confront and cope with the ways in which the values on which they were reared conflict with and complicate adult life, and I really don't think, despite a brief, hand-waving effort to explain how today's counter-culture kids are different from those of the 60s and the 70s, that the frustrations and protest movements of today are much distinct from those of the past.

The real question, though, is to what extent a wide-ranging discontent can explain a disproportionately visible but small-scale phenomenon like mass violence. There may be a current "epidemic" by comparison to previous decades, but the absolute number of people committing acts of mass violence is still miniscule. To what extent can we assume that these deeply troubled individuals are different in degree rather than kind from their conflicted but not violent contemporaries, that they are products of a sort of perfect storm of common social failings rather than of distinctive biological or environmental circumstance? The issues under discussion in this book are important, but their importance doesn't stand or fall on their possible contribution to mass violence. Bullying is a social problem even if the idea (echoed here) that it was a significant factor in the Columbine shooting has been convincingly debunked. Part of the reason our society can't make any progress on major questions of our time is that we only talk about them after extreme, headline-generating cases. We talk about guns and mental health after mass shootings, about bullying after tragic suicides, about bigotry after a celebrity says something stupid or careless. But gun violence hurts many more people than mass shooting victims, and bullying scars even the vast majorities who don't commit suicide. In some ways the social commentary of this book might be more powerful if it were entirely divorced from the question of mass violence.

To return, then, to the spiral notebook. The Singulars seem to believe, or to hope, that because Holmes was smarter than some mass shooters, and because he was studying the workings of the mind, his notebook will lay bare not only his only motivations but the logic (as it were) of mass shootings more generally. But every mass shooter is different. There can be no Rosetta Stone for their minds, any more than Eric Singular can speak for his generation. The best thing about The Spiral Notebook is its warm-hearted optimism, its emphasis on the importance of community, acknowledgement, and understanding for the general welfare. But part of understanding is acceptance of complexity, recognition that some dilemmas remain inexplicable or insoluble and that a hunger for simple and satisfying answers can exacerbate the problems it's meant to solve. This is a valuable book for those looking for an introduction to the social and political topics that surround mass violence, but its limitations make it a place to begin rather than a one-stop guide.

Flunking Out Of Life On Earth . . . .
By SundayAtDusk
The The Spiral Notebook: The Aurora Theater Shooter and the Epidemic of Mass Violence Committed by American Youth is a highly readable book, but does it offer any new insights in mass violence committed by young men? It covers topics that have been addressed over and over again--violence in video games and movies, availability of guns and ammunition, bullying, drugs prescribed by doctors and psychiatrists, obsessions with superheroes and post apocalyptic stories, reading limited to comic books or online sources, etc. It concentrated a little on drinking, probably not anywhere near as much as it should have. That's true of marijuana usage, too, if it was even mentioned in the book. Also, organized religion, or the lack there of, was oddly hardly mentioned.

To make this book different from the rest on the topic, authors Stephen and Joyce Singular used their own twenty-something son, Eric, as the main spokesperson for his generation. I'm also wondering if they did that to show other parents how they didn't really know what their son was thinking, until he started talking to them about the topics in this book. Thus, they could understand how parents of murderous young men could be truly shocked when they got a call from the police or press. The quotes from Eric and others from his generation in the book are interesting, but nothing new. In fact, many sound exactly like the sentiments expressed by other twenty-something individuals of past generations, such as those during the 1960s. No, life isn't like it was back in the 1960s, but the desire of some young people to change the world, to make it better, is the same; just as the complaint that parents cannot possibly understand their children's generation.

The main murderer concentrated on in The Spiral Notebook: The Aurora Theater Shooter and the Epidemic of Mass Violence Committed by American Youth is of course James Holmes, who killed 12 people and wounded 70 in a Colorado theater that was showing a Batman movie in 2012. His trial is still going on today, as I write this review, and his spiral notebook is finally being read in court. Hence, the Singular's book has nothing from the notebook in it, so it is extremely odd that they would name their book after that then unknown-to-the-public notebook. James Holmes probably isn't the best twenty-something killer to look at either. He is one unusual person, who actually makes one think of the maxim that the line between genius and insanity is thin. Thus, why he did what he did might have little to do with why other men in his generation kill. All these young men made the same decision, however--the decision to kill. Personally, my interest in why they kill is limited, since I don't find such killers to be anything but total failures in living their current lifetime and overcoming suffering they should have overcome, as opposed to seeing their suffering as so special that they had the right to make others suffer.

Had The Potential To Be Great, But Missed On Several Levels
By Frederick S. Goethel
The Colorado theater massacre was one of the worst mass shootings in history, until that point in time, and lessons learned from the events and the shooter had the potential to reveal what goes through the mind of a mass murderer and what we can do to start to reduce the number of these incidents in the future.

The information presented about the actually shooting, and the shooter were excellent and provided interesting information about the crime. The case, however, is under a gag order from the court, so the amount of information and the number of sources was limited. That hampered the efforts to discuss the shootings to the level they deserved.

The information about why this is happening is, in my opinion, lacking. Interviewing people of the generation that is usually involved in these shooting revealed a broad spread of ideas, but many of them lacked credible substance. I can't really get to enthused about the idea that they have "lived with war and violence their whole lives" or that there they are under tremendous strain to perform well. I grww up in the sixties. We went from being worried about being vaporized by nuclear weapons every day to the Vietnam war on the nightly news and we lived in a constant state of war for a decade. Yet my generation isn't involved in mass shootings.

I do think that the student who pointed to easy access to guns and to violent video games and movies are on to something. The violence portrayed in these venues has no cost associated with it. While I grew up with the Roadrunner getting run over all the time, it wasn't real. The video games portray real violence to real people with no consequences. In the end, it isn't the kids fault for these. The parents need to limit exposure to these games instead of using them as electronic baby sitters. Our daughter was exposed to them, but we never allowed them in our house. We wanted to promote a culture of reading and activity…not sitting around playing games of fantasy on TV.

In the long run, the biggest failure of this book was to write and issue it before the trail is settled. The trail is currently ongoing, and a lot more information would have been available had the authors simply waited for the trail to take place. The premise of the book surrounds the spiral notebook, yet no one has even seen the contents. The authors should have waited to get as much information as possible before going to press. It would have made for a much more complete book.

Ferdinand Magellan: Circumnavigating the World (In the Footsteps of Explorers), by Katharine Bailey

This book is intended for ages 8-14. In 1519, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan took five ships and 200 men on an epic journey around the world on behalf of Spain. This colourful book follows the world's first circumnavigation by sail through a dramatic passage of disease, starvation, and death. Young readers will learn about the ancient spice trade, early sea navigation, and what life was like aboard a sailing ship in the age of exploration. A recipe from the period is also included. The topics include: what Europe was like before Magellan; science in Magellan's times, and the effect his voyage had on it; his journey down the African coast, across the Atlantic, down along South America, then across the Atlantic to the Spice Islands; mutiny at sea; life at sea; and, the Philippine Natives that Magellan met, and their way of life.

A Great Historical Introduction
By Elvin Ortiz
The text narrates with detail Magellan's quest for an alternative route to the coveted Spice Islands, a journey financed by an ambitious Spanish king, and led by a famous or infamous Portuguese-born explorer Magellan. The text is appropriate for use in the classroom; its language targets fourth to sixth graders; and its content is valuable. By this, I mean that it does not give the limited information that you would find in an encyclopedia. I even remember learning about Magellan in 7th grade, and never had an idea of how brutal and violent a journey of this nature could be. Readers may also get a better idea of what long journeys in ships were like: crews having to confront scurvy (an illness that affected the teeth), possible starvation, other illnesses related to malnutrition, and (in this text) mutiny. Although a violent account (readers learn from a man's throat being slit for leading a mutiny) and of torture devices used by Magellan to control sailors, the author is careful enough in describing these in a manner appropriate for school children addressed in these texts. As I read this text, I got a strong feeling that the greed of these empires in those days had dire consequences on the people used for these expeditions.

As in Ponce De Leon, this text also uses text features, such as sidebars, illustrations, maps, photos, and text boxes that give additional information in an effective manner. It even includes a recipe of a native food, or of a food consumed by the sailors. The text is also properly organized with headings and subtitles. In addition, information about the native peoples that are part of this story is included. This is a great complementary text about the exploration age.

Informative and Fun!
By Batfan7
For such a short book, I found it to be full of fun little bits of trivia and perfect to hold the interest of a kid. It outlined the voyage of Magellan and gave the story from more than one perspective (did the crew do the right thing or not? The answer is left ambiguous) but more than just that is touched on. For example, a single page is devoted to describing what was provided for the crew - food and such. You end the book feeling that the survival of the crew was surprising and that fact gives weight to the idea that it was a monumental task worth celebrating, despite the tragedy and savagery that surrounded the whole thing.

By Kimberly Anne
For a book written to elementary students, I didn't feel that the torture stories of the Spanish Inquisition and onboard Magellan's ship needed to be included. It is unfortunate because the illustrations would have been valuable for my 9 yo son's study of explorers but after he read a few pages he asked to not have to continue reading it. He found the stories too disturbing.
