Action packed thriller

Synopsis (spoiler-free):
The year is 1977 and David returns to Mallorca after roaming the oceans as a chef on the five-mast schooner the Evolution. He has missed the smell of Majorcan pines and is now back with the mission to become the first sushi chef on the island. When he pitches his idea for raw fish in the Boutique Hotel on the island, his eyes meet Aurora who is staying as a guest in the hotel. When he looks into her green eyes, the ground moves for him. Call it coincidence or fate but the next day she sees him in the centre of Palma and she is determined to eat his sushi. They end up parachute jumping together and when it’s her turn Aurora blacks out and by a turn of luck her foot becomes caught up in his rope when he releases his chute. After experiencing near death like this, their sense of belonging together is even more intense and the next couple of days are spent in complete happiness together. When her holiday is coming to an end she promises David to return in three months’ time. He counts down the days and finally the plane touches down, he will be able to see her again and they can start their future together. He has it all mapped out, with a romantic get-together the first few days in a remote cabin in the woods. But as soon as she sets foot on the ground the tables turn and it certainly did not turn out how he imagined. He could never have thought that there would be a murder that day and he would be running for his life from a couple of killers, aided by a corrupt policeman. The police is looking for two fugitives and they are chased in hot pursuit, being shot at by different parties and with absolutely no clue why all this is happening. It is, however, clear that they want to kill them while also framing him for the murder. The almost impossible task rests on his shoulders to get them both to safety and reveal the story that brought this all come crashing down.

My opinion:
The author doesn’t beat around the bush, already in the very first chapter we are introduced to the delightful premise that David would remember the spring of ‘77 as the best of his life, and that it would turn into a murderous, bloody, soul-destroying summer. It certainly triggered my interest and the story kept my interest all the way through. It starts off with some sweet romance but the main part of the novel is quite action-packed really, bullets are flying, they are labelled fugitives and they are running for their lives through the forest, in hot pursuit not only from the hitmen but also from the police. There are quite a lot of characters introduced to us in this novel and Mr. Stanke shows real skill in portraying them all in such detail, every one of them had a solid background story to go with. I was a little confused sometimes because it was not always very clear from the very start of a new chapter from whose perspective I was reading, they were fast changing, but it didn’t really stop the flow from the book either so I don’t hold it against him. It’s well-written, enjoyable to read with a good plot and an ending that would be rather spectacular were it be made into a movie. I also really felt myself in the year 1977 and could just about hear Elvis singing so well done.

Really enjoyed this. A real page turner, an exciting plot with a vivid sense of place. Well paced with a host of diverse rounded characters. Humour, romance as well as heartbreak, I can't wait for his next book.

A Treat for Thriller Lovers

You know that feeling when you read a book and you just want to force everyone else to read it too? That's how I would describe this novel. I've gifted this to a couple of people who've also loved it. The setting is great - you feel like you've gone back in time to the seventies and you're really there on the island. I had no idea what was going to happen next at any point, and yet the plot never felt contrived. There were a lot of characters, but I got to spend time with and get to know each of them (and fell in love with a few). You definitely need to give this book a whirl if you're a thriller fan.

About the Author
STEVE DUCK is the Daniel and Amy Starch Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Iowa and has been a keen promoter of the field of personal relationships research since it was formed. He co-founded the first International Conference on Personal Relationships in 1982, and was founder and first editor of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, first President of the International Network on Personal Relationships, the professional organisation for the research field, and editor of the first edition of the Handbook of Personal Relationships. The Steve Duck New Scholar award was endowed and named in his honour by a group of independent scholars to recognize his promotion of the work of younger professionals and his dedication to developing the field.
BARBARA R. SARASON, Research Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Washington, has worked extensively in the research areas of stress,coping, social support, and the role personal relationships play in health and well-being. She has published more than 100 articles and book chapters in these areas as well as work on psychological strategies to promote prosocial behaviour and the influence of cultural factors on family and social relationships, especially among immigrants and minority groups. She is co-editor of several books, inclduing four on social support and one on cognitive interference and anxiety in social situations and is currently an associate editor of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.

Soon, it becomes quite apparent that someone is trying to kill him; even after Harry is ensconed in the safety of fall term at Hogwarts, the attacks continue. Myriad subplots involving a new teacher with a secret, Hermione's strangely heavy class schedule, and enmity between Ron's old rat, Scabbers, and Hermione's new cat, Crookshanks, all mesh to create a stunning climax. The pace is nonstop, with thrilling games of Quidditch, terrifying Omens of Death, some skillful time travel, and lots of slimy Slytherins sneaking about causing trouble. This is a fabulously entertaining read that will have Harry Potter fans cheering for more.

About to fall apart

I am very upset with the turn out of this book. When I read it i'm going to be afraid that it's going to fall apart because it already is. For something this worn down I would have rather paid half of what I did.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book in the Harry Potter series. It follows Harry and his friends through the excitement that is their third year at Hogwarts. In the start of the book, we find Harry doing his homework by flashlight under his bed sheets- as any proof of his time at that wizarding school is forbidden by the Drusley’s. It’s Harry’s birthday and for the first time in his life, he receives birthday cards and presents from his friends Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid. During a visit from Aunt Marge, Vernon and Harry make a deal, if he can keep Hogwarts a secret, Vernon will sign Harry’s permission slip to visit Hogsmead on the weekends. Unfortunately that goes out the window when Marge insults Harry’s family and he accidentally inflates her, whoops. The Knight Bus then picks up Harry after he leaves the house suddenly, but not after seeing something peculiar in the bushes…
The main conflict of this novel is the fact that escaped prisoner Sirius Black is on the loose and dangerous. Dementors have made Hogwarts their home for the year and even made a little pit stop on the Hogwarts Express to make sure Sirius Black wasn’t aboard. While they didn’t find the prisoner on the train, they did find Harry, because of the sorrow and death he has already witnessed the dementors were drawn to him. The mysterious person (who we find out to be the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher) is at the ready to produce a Patronus charm, which is used to ward of dementors with a happy memory.
The school year starts and the dementors are not respecting the boundaries that Dumbledore has put into place. They even disrupt a Quidditch match and send Harry flying off of his broom and his Nimbus 2000 into the Whomping Willow. Harry get used to his new classes and the frequent disappearance and reappearance of Hermione as she seems to be taking more class than any average witch or wizard can handle. Third year is when students start taking Divination and it’s not Harry’s favorite subject to say the least. Professor Trelawney often tells Harry he is in grave danger after finding the Grim in his cup, and she becomes overcome with a prophecy when they are alone in the classroom. "It will happen tonight. The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight, the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his master. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant's aid, greater and more terrible than ever before. Tonight... before midnight... the servant... will set out... to rejoin... his master..." (ch.16 pg.324)
The story concludes with Harry, Ron and Hermione using Hermione’s Time Turner to not only save Hagrid’s friend Buckbeak, but also Harry’s innocent godfather Sirius Black, who has spent the last 12 years in Azkaban for a crime he did not commit. With the help of their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher (who is also a werewolf!) Remus Lupin; Harry finds out more about his parents past and how their secret keeper and friend Peter Pettigrew betrayed them.
This is easily my favorite Harry Potter book out of the seven. I’d give it ten out of five stars if I could. It introduced me to my favorite character of the series (Remus Lupin) and helped to continue the story of Harry Potter and helped Harry find out more about his parents before they died. He also was reconnected with his godfather and James’ best friend Sirius Black.

A Breath of High-Octane Oxygen!

Who’d have thought that two warring neighbors in an upscale neighborhood (Malibu, CA) could escalate their squabbles to an epic level? I spent a lot of time wondering "Blimey, could this work in everyday life?"

Hey folks, here’s my tuppenceworth. Two memorable characters: One good, a sophisticated lawyer, but still a “babe in the woods” compared to the other, a crafty son-of-a-gun, more cunning than the Horned One himself, and this bloke, well, he wears his charisma thick on his sleeve. So I’m thinking, have we finally entered the age of the thinking thriller? If one discounts the purple prose pouring unctuously from Machiavelli’s lips (which incidentally fits this impostor’s persona to a T), it’s a bloody brilliant novel—a novel exploiting a novel concept! The plot builds momentum like an opus. If you must know, by the time it reached its crescendo towards chapter 35 or so, I was on my feet cheering, ready with a standing ovation and a bottle of Michelob in my right hand—cf. last chapter. All right, I’m a bit of a cat lover, too, but still!

I’ve got to warn you, though, or you'll find yourself sneaking moments out of your busy day to decrypt the meaning of life using Machiavelli’s clever word acrobatics, which goes by a fancy French name for voodoo-something-or-other, but is nonetheless an eminently patentable formula if you ask me! In fact, I think I've just glimpsed the writing on the wall, and if I’m not deluded it reads: CHASE’S BOOK GARNERS PLAUDITS ON GLOBAL SCALE!

For a jaded bloke like myself, reading Know Thy Neighbor was like a breath of high octane oxygen after spending hours in a cigar smoke-filled room.

Outstanding Manual for Hypnotherapists

Steve Gilligan is a remarkable healer (although he probably wouldn't choose that label himself) and teacher and Therapeutic Trances lays out the principles and practice of creating rapport, accepting and utilizing the patient's worldview and symptoms, and joining with the patient in order to create a hypnotic environment in which true healing can take place.

The one thing that strikes me as slightly challenging about Therapeutic Trances is the academic tone of the book. That said, this is an indispensable manual for understanding Ericksonian hypnosis from someone who started studying with Erickson at age 19.

Therapeutic Trances is not an easy read, but what you learn in the pages will probably change not only your practice but the way you see the world. A great book by a master practitioner and compassionate teacher.

A must have

If you want to learn about Ericksonian hypnosis this is a must have. It covers major important skills that a hypnotherapist should have. most books out there justgive you techniques after techniques but this one does more, sharing the inside states, attitudes, beliefs a therapist should have. People just don't understand that it's not knowing the techniques that makes a great therapist but it's more of the characteristic and personality of the therapist that makes the techniques work. the same applies with all fields of interactional service. you will learn about flexibility and treat each client anew base on their needs and to be in the moment with the client and not recite scripted inductions like most schools teach you. this books sure is worth getting if you are seriously into hypnotherapy. It covers so much more important areas for a hypnotherapist that isn't emphasized in most schools. you'll learn more about being a hypnotherapist from this book then from any other book. Another cool thing about this book is that stephen is a great writer who is clear,concise and organized, not fluffy. i've gotten books from great hypnotherapist but was very dissapointed because they couldn't write. stephen isn't one of them. you can tell he cares about people learning about hypnosis and he don't hold back like most people.

If you are tired of the sparse explanations of how to induce confusion to facilitate hypnotic trance, you are in for a treat here. The entire book is rich with new insights in hypnosis and hypnotherapy, but the section on confusion is stellar.

As he displays again in this entertaining and illuminating look at how we make snap judgments—about people's intentions, the authenticity of a work of art, even military strategy—he can parse for general readers the intricacies of fascinating but little-known fields like professional food tasting (why does Coke taste different from Pepsi?). Gladwell's conclusion, after studying how people make instant decisions in a wide range of fields from psychology to police work, is that we can make better instant judgments by training our mind and senses to focus on the most relevant facts—and that less input (as long as it's the right input) is better than more. Perhaps the most stunning example he gives of this counterintuitive truth is the most expensive war game ever conducted by the Pentagon, in which a wily marine officer, playing "a rogue military commander" in the Persian Gulf and unencumbered by hierarchy, bureaucracy and too much technology, humiliated American forces whose chiefs were bogged down in matrixes, systems for decision making and information overload. But if one sets aside Gladwell's dazzle, some questions and apparent inconsistencies emerge. Gladwell, the author of 2000’s The Tipping Point, reaches to create another popular intellectual phenomenon by overturning received wisdom about how we make decisions. As in his articles for The New Yorker, where he works as a staff writer, the anecdotes throughout Blink are lively and entertaining. But the sheer quantity of stories about everything from sip tasters for Coca-Cola and the Pepsi challenge to gut reactions to "fake" art overwhelms the main theme of the book; many critics feel Gladwell isn’t entirely sure what his theme is. David Brooks of The New York Times Book Review sums up the critical consensus nicely: "If you want to trust my snap judgment, buy this book: you’ll be delighted. If you want to trust my more reflective second judgment, buy it: you’ll be delighted but frustrated, troubled and left wanting more."

Blink your way to acting right, but only if your personality is up to the task

They say that quick-thinking people can instinctively make the right (or best possible decisions) in any situation. The key is paradoxically not to dwell and ponder for more than a very short time. Sort of "May the power be with you" moment when ironically you make the right decision without any procedural/sequential thinking.
This book covers that state of mind in a fun and thorough fashion with examples of how we can act under various scenarios and also be satisfied with what we did when we look back on an event.
However, the trick to be able to operate that way comes from much deeper - you have to have the right personality - or develop one - that is calm, self-reliant and self-trusting. Being the type that is 'sorry' for this and that, or complaining about anything at all, is not one that can generate good 'blink speed' decisions.

Blink by Malcolm Gladwell is a book about the power of first impressions in your unconscious. Malcolm Gladwell is a Canadian journalist, author, and speaker who has been writing for the New Yorker since 1996. The book takes you through many different stories all about what goes on behind the locked doors of your unconscious. Gladwell argues that we are thin slicing all the time – when we must judge an unfamiliar situation, meet a new person, interview a potential employee – that we take a small piece of a person or situation and can immediately make amazingly correct split second decisions. I believe that Gladwell very effectively makes this argument using data and examples.

The book starts off by explaining the amazing and rather mind blowing studys of John Gottman. Gottman, a marriage counselor, turns the seemingly complicated issue of divorce into a simple equation. Looking at just 30 minutes of a couples conversation, Gottman can predict with 95% accuracy if the couple will still be together 15 years later (21). Amazing right? From there the book moves quickly through various examples of thin slicing. From marriages and dating, to judging a prospective employee in a snap decision, Gladwell covers it all.

Firstly Gladwell uses data and studies to prove his argument that we are always thin slicing and doing so effectively. Back to Gottman’s study from earlier, Gladwell uses this data to prove to us that we don't need to spend hours days or weeks getting to know a couple before being able to effectively predict whether they will stay together or not. By taking a very thin slice of the couples conversation (30 min) Gottman can effectively predict if their marriage will last. Thus, proving to us that we do not need all the time or information in the world and that we can very effectively get the gist of something with only a small piece of information.

Secondly Gladwell uses true stories/anecdotes to prove that we can, in fact, effectively make quick snap judgments. Take Gladwell’s story in the introduction for example. He tells the story of how the Getty Museum was going to buy an ancient Greek statue. They did all the normal checks to make sure that the peace with authentic and it checked out. At the last minute they had an art historian come to take a look and in an instant he decided that it was a fake. “It just didn't look right” (9). Sure enough he was right. This, Gladwell argues, is proof of your brains amazing ability to make split-second decisions without actually having all the information you might think you need.

What Gladwell is saying in all of his stories is that we all have something in our brains that helps us to use the sum of all our experiences to make effective decisions without even knowing we are doing so. Your unconscious brain does it's best to give you information you might need about the situation. This lets your conscious brain focus on other things such as the actual task at hand, instead of the background information you didn't even know that you needed. Indeed, it's hard to grasp at first but by the fourth or fifth story he tells, you'll be able to fully understand what he means.

Overall, Gladwell very effectively argues that we have the ability to make correct split second decisions without knowing all we may think we need to know. Blink has proven to be a very interesting book (as it should be – it's won many awards) and is definitely worth reading.

Don't start here with Gladwell

Malcom Gladwell of course took the world by storm with Tipping Point and had a tremendous effort in Outliers about what makes great people great. In my opinion, BLINK is only a so-so effort from someone that could produce something much better.

Blink discusses how we make snap judgements more than we think we do and how to harness the power of those, but also to beware of those as well. It discusses the number of different examples of how we do this, but it seems repetitive and redundant. I didn't really learn anything new in the 2nd half of the book that wasn't presented in the first portion other than that I should beware of these instincts. So what I am unclear on is, should I trust the instincts or beware of them? Both? Depends on the situation? I guess that can be left up to interpretation. There are tons of anecdotes which is what Gladwell does well. Some are very interesting such as New Coke vs. Pepsi and snap judgements we make when we meet different people, etc. Some are not so interesting such as that when he speaks of military snipers-his point being how it is interesting that in a sequence that is 2.5 seconds, you can describe it for several minutes or more what was going through your head-which I believe is true.

There is value with this book-which is essentially in understanding those philosophies above. I will consistently think of my BLINK instincts and be aware of them whereas before I was not. I will also remember not to judge things on those BLINK instincts and "Thin Slicing"-which is easy for all of us to do. I'm glad I read it-which is why it gets 3 stars-but I can't say it will change your life, but then again Gladwell probably would not say that either. Was this review too long? I guess if it was longer than a BLINK maybe I lost you? Or maybe I didn't?
