Cameron Banga is lead designer at 9magnets LLC, a company he cofounded. He has worked on more than one hundred mobile apps for clients ranging from pro sports teams to educators to large corporations. Starts at the beginning and takes you to the end...

Designing developing natural user interfaces for touch and gesture on mobile devices is not the same as web and desktop UI design and development. Mobile devices are used in different contexts, and bring different personas to the table. Having web and desktop UI design experience does not make you a qualified mobile UI designer.

Although it was much worse back in the Dot Com Boom days, I still see publication and commercial print designers trying to design web sites the way they design a magazine. A lot of them finally figured out web design is different, and we are now dealing with getting them to realize web and desktop UI design experience does not make you a qualified mobile UI designer.

This book is a great place for them to start. It is the book for the beginner to get started with mobile interaction design. It is perfect for designers, developers, architects, project managers, and testers migrating from web and desktop application development to start with mobile interaction design.

It starts with an introduction to mobile interaction and sets up the context that the book's topics live in. The authors start at the very beginning of the mobile timeline and explain how we got to where we are today.

This book does a great job of pointing out the basics. Some times they use sidebars like this one- "When building applications, enable operating system features such as text-to-voice, color blindness controls, and enhanced zoom modes to see how your on-screen interactions work with these features..."

Sometimes I felt they got a little too basic. Like with this sidebar for example- "Don't confuse the term "interface chrome" with the Google Chrome browser. Interface chrome is somewhat common computer software design slang used to describe buttons of an interface...."

I actually laughed at that one because I thought it was just a joke. The second half of the tip clued me in. It wasn't a joke.

One of the coolest things this book did for me was push me to try Balsamiq Mockups. I have seen the tool used before, but I have been using SketchFlow and Storyboards in PowerPoint.

When I am in an environment where users believe a prototype and production release are the same thing, I go to extra lengths to delineate the two. Tools that present mockups that look like they have been sketched really help to get the point across.

Realistic mockups send the message that the app has screens, buttons, and if the screen changes when you clicked on the buttons, it must be done and ready to go. Users don't understand that they are just screens for vetting the UI and not working application screens.

The authors have a way of bringing to light things that are subtle and sometimes not so obvious. An example of that would be sandboxes and the way your applications now run within them. When designing mobile applications this needs to be taken into account.

The authors have created a website and have a page dedicated to each chapter of the book. Each page contains all the resources that they point out throughout the chapter. It is a very convenient way to get to the resources that they talk about.

If you are expecting a book with a ton of screenshots explaining what was wrong with each one, and then providing a solution to the problem, look elsewhere. It does have a ton of examples, but this book covers topics in a way that makes you think about them.

The last thing I will say about the book is that it is current. In the brutal world of mobile that says a lot about the book. I don't know how many books I have received on the day it was published only throw it aside because it is no longer current.

I highly recommend this book for every role on a mobile project. Everyone should understand mobile integration design at the level presented in the book.

An average mobile design book geared toward iOS and Android

I found the first 6 chapters of the book the most beneficial. The remaining chapters were ok, but the information was not that great for me. Part of the reason may be because I am a developer who has helped design user interfaces and user experiences with the help of the client. The ideas in the remaining chapters are good such as designing for your users and making things simple especially for mobile apps.

As the author states up front, his experience is with iOS and Android. So, if you are looking for design guidance for Windows phone or tablet apps, this is not the book for you. He does mention some of the high level design (e.g. flat design) concepts of Windows. As an example he talks about iOS moving to a flat design, but waits 2 more chapters to say the design was actually in Windows first. As you may tell, I know a bit about Windows design concepts. I do not work for Microsoft, but develop on their platforms a lot for work.

This is the 3rd design book I have read in the last 6 months. I found this to be the least helpful for me. However, if you are an iOS or Android designer (or developer) than this book may be of benefit to you. If you are a developer with little design experience or a Windows designer / developer, than I am not sure this is the book for you.

Great book to give you a good grounding in mobile design.

Great book, but had a lot of history as to how we got to where we are. Good information to know, but you may skim if you are in a hurry.
But once you get to the parts about UX it is solid. Helps you make sure you cover all the bases.

I also enjoyed the Standout Apps Appendix. Having someone point out what makes the apps we use all the time great is very helpful in using similar ideas in your own apps.

Excellent Volume of Primary Source with Many Extras

What a pleasant surprise to find the Memoirs of Kolokotronis for sale on Amazon! This edition is nicely put together with many extras and a fine text, in both Greek and English, of the actual memoir. Anyone interested in the history of the Greek War of Independence or the origins of the "klephts" who were the guerrillas that fought in it, will profit from access to this edition of a primary source written by the premier Greek military figure of the uprising. The translation is excellent, for those who do not know English, and the original Greek is there for those who read Greek. Many thanks to Mitch Fatouros for all his hard work that resulted in this volume. And just for the record, I don't know Mr. Fatouros, so this is not a planted review. I just happen to be studying this period of history for my own edification right now and I was thrilled to be able to add this book to my research.

Really enjoyed reading this book and also greatly appreciate the authors decision to publish the text in both languages. While English gives you the meaning of what was written.... the Greek actually mentally places you in the era of what was going on.

Not worth the price

This book is completely not worth the price in any way shape or form. I had to use this book for a semester and this book caused the most pain I have ever had in any class. Let's start with the print quality. You would think that a book with this price would have the best print quality, you would be wrong. Try black and green, no color images at all. This wouldn't be such an issue if there weren't parts of the book that refer to charts with colors like yellow, red, and blue. This means that the text of the book tells you to look at charts in parts of the book you simply can't see. This book screams cheap in design and the rest of the book supports the impression.

It gets worst, the content of the chapters is simply terrible. Lets start at the beginning, the book claims that it is suitable for beginners it is not. The first chapter starts with a simple hello word program in perl, simple enough. That is the extent of basic perl that you are taught. Seriously the gulf in perl knowledge needed from chapter one to two is massive. You are taught nothing about perl before you are expected to use quite a lot perl. I am talking about a class of twenty which was completely lost in the transition from chapter one to two. For a book to be so badly designed for that many people to get lost, it says something. The book has more lapses in logical progression.

One of the book features is an on your section at the end of each chapter which is supposed to practice your skills that you learned in the chapter. It is completely useless. The end of chapter section actually requires knowledge that isn't taught until latter in the book to solve. For example, one of the hints to solve the problem was recursion, which is a fairly advanced technique, it wasn't taught until several chapters later in the book, but was needed at that point in the book. Even better the explanation on how to do it was beyond substandard, and it lacked a useful code example, which made learning how to do recursion in this book impossible. In general a lot of the code examples are lacking. One of the things that my instructor told me was to comment on every line of my code, otherwise it would be difficult for another person to follow. The book doesn't do this. A lot of the code in the book lack any type of meaningful comments making understand the examples very difficult, not very conductive to learning.

In all this book is not worth the money and is not suitable for any type of instruction.

Fantastic resource! Immediately usable!

This is an amazing resource! I have been making boring excel charts for years. It has been frustrating because my employer would balk at purchasing different software and providing training. This book is going to step up my game. She shows you step by step how to use Excel to create some fantastic charts that you never knew you could make with Excel. Not only that, but she teaches you a different way to think about presenting data visually - one that non-data nerds can quickly get the point of the visualization. My co-workers and husband are bewildered why I would get so excited about charts:)
If you already are familiar with the chart function in Excel, there is very little learning curve. Even if you have no experience, Stephanie Evergreen takes you through it step-by-step.

Feeling like a data viz wiz

Effective Data Visualization is the perfect book for people who want to level up their data visualization skills beyond the defaults in Excel. I’ve learned so much from this book and it has fundamentally changed the way I think about visualizing data.

What I like about this book is that it doesn’t assume you have data visualization knowledge apart from basic familiarity with Excel. That’s actually a plus for this book, as the author Stephanie Evergreen shows you how to make most of these charts IN EXCEL. I'm not always the biggest fan of Excel but it really is the first place most people start with data viz. So if we’re all going to start there, at least this book shows you how to make your Excel charts not suck. Even better, Evergreen tells you how difficult a chart will be to create in Excel by including a helpful Excel ninja rating.

The other thing that’s great about this book is that charts are organized by the type of data you want to present. Categories include: a single number, comparisons, beating a benchmark, survey results, parts of a whole, correlations, qualitative data, and data over time. Evergreen bases her selection of charts on research showing which chart types are more effective for information retention. It’s a different way to think about charts, but one that I’m finding really useful.

The range of covered charts includes the usual suspects, from bar charts to scatter plots, but Evergreen also details visuals that I haven’t used before. The ones I plan to immediately add to my graphing repertoire are: icon arrays, slopegraphs, dot plots, back-to-back bar charts, and small multiples graphs.

Beyond choosing the right chart and knowing how to make it in Excel (which, of themselves, are incredibly useful skills), this book gave me a framework for creating charts that are easy to read and convey a clear message. For example, I now understand how to write an effective chart title, select good colors, reduce data overload, and eliminate chart junk. It’s reached the point where I can’t even look at my old graphs without wanting to tweak them.

There is one downside of this book and it’s that it was done with two-color printing. All of the charts are limited to shades of blue and grey. While this makes for a visually cohesive (and cheaper) book, the printed figures occasionally do not fully convey the author’s point – most often when showing a bad chart. This is annoying but it’s not enough to detract from the many good things about this book.

Andrew Weil, M.D., has degrees in biology and medicine from Harvard University. Drugs do not give us different minds. They do something to our minds to change our perspective of the world. Andrew Weil knows this; but so does any intelligent person who takes a mind altering substance with the goal of understand his or her own mind. Dr. Weil wrote this book when he was a young man traviling from the U.S. all the way down the Americas. His journey is to better understand how different cultures and people use pychoactive substances to change their lives. He begins with native americans in the Dakota's and finishes with tribesman in South America. Many of his observations are valuable, such as the role eclipses mankind's evolution; and many are questionable, such as the value of self-induced vomiting. Recommended for young person's and person's inexperienced with psychoactive substances who want a little education from a intelligent user. Many of us however might find Dr. Weil's first book -The Natural Mind- to be more enlightening.
