About the Author
Philip R. DeVita received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, and is Professor of Anthropology at the State University of New York, Plattsburgh. Professor DeVita's teaching and research interests include cultural, economic, linguistic, and psychological anthropology, as well as peoples of the Pacific and cultures of the Canadian Maritimes. Professor DeVita has edited numerous books and anthologies, including THE NAKED ANTHROPOLOGIST: TALES FROM AROUND THE WORLD, AND THE HUMBLED ANTHROPOLOGIST: TALES FROM THEPACIFIC, both published by Wadsworth.

James D. Armstrong is Professor of Anthropology at the State University of New York, Plattsburgh, where he teaches courses on Israeli culture, sexuality, methods, and global problems. He has done extensive fieldwork on identity and social organization in modern-day Israel, and published articles on mainstream Israeli culture, extensionist semantics, and engaged pedagogy.

Anthropology and Sociology students a must have.

This book is a collection of short accounts of foreign people's experiences in the American Culture; compared to their own culture from that of their home country. The experiences that these people have in the United States gives great insight to how America is a far different culture from her international ones, and it shows some of the short fallings living in America compared to that of other cultures in the world. America also has it's advantages as well over other cultures, as you will read if you purchase this book.

I highly recommend this book for Anthropology and Sociology college students, as well as anyone interested in a great read. The book is around 300 pages and not too long for those who do not like to read, however the content is very interesting for those who love to read. This is a great learning tool for high school Geography and History teachers, as it will give great debates and spur more conversation in the classroom. I highly recommend this book, as it is one of my favorite books and I learned a great deal from.

I highly recommend the 2nd edition out of the 3 editions published if you can find it. It has a small picutre of McDonald's on it, so you will know which one it is.

The Bible of All Scanning Electron Microscopy Books

If you are like me and had to use a Scanning Electron Microscope or SEM, you want to start with the basics that everyone goes by. This book is a safe bet that most everyone knows about. Plus, it is written with very little background in the world of electron microscopy. Too many authors to list but it's wonderful that alot of experts got together to present this material in clear, concise manner. Before you grab your solid-state physics book or check Wikipedia, just relax and page through it since this book pretty much makes it easy for you.

Chapters are arranged by the following: What is SEM?, How SEM works?, and Why are we interested with SEM? That's the easiest way to explain rather than list all the chapters. If you have a specific question, you don't even have to read through the previous chapters (if you have rough understanding). The size of this book is a BIG PLUS. It's compact compared to the monsterous Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) book by Barry Carter which is another great reference. For this price, you would be lucky to find another good reference book under $100 with such relevant information.

The present Part IV develops the geometry of transformations of the plane that map circles to circles (conformal or anallagmatic geometry). The notion of inversion, or reflection in a circle, is the key tool employed. Applications include ruler-and-compass constructions and the Poincaré model of hyperbolic geometry.

The straightforward, direct presentation assumes only some background in high-school geometry and trigonometry. Numerous exercises lead the reader to a mastery of the methods and concepts. The second half of the book contains detailed solutions of all the problems.

Issac Moisevitch Yaglom graduated from Sverdlovsk University in 1942 and received his Candidate's Degree in 1945. He then moved onto the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute since 1957 and is the author of many scientific publications.

Long time waited....

The last volume of the Yaglom's serie about geometric transformations has been long time waited (the english version, of course), but it worth the time!
An excellent monography about inversion (or reflection in a circle, to follow the taste of the author)with many well chosen exercises and problems.
So, the non russian speaking mathematicians have the opportunity of complete the saga of geometric transformations, thanks of the work of Abe Shenitzer as translator and the MAA as publishers. Strongly recommended

Brilliant exposition

These days, Geometry is making a come back in the school curriculum in many parts of the world. 20 years ago, Feurbach's theoerm used to be taught in schools/colleges. Inversion as a technique of problem solving helped students to appreciate many beautiful theorems of Geometry. Alas, the last few years saw the demise of geometry from schools. With that,the ability to visualize also diminished and students found it difficult to appreciate Calculus. Fortunately, the four volumes Geometric Transformations are still available - and a keen student would get a very solid understanding of the methods of proof through the beautiful problems in these books. Particularly, the Volume 4 is about circular transformations. Inversion as a technique would also help students to appreciate Mobius transformations when they encounter the same as part of Complex Analysis course. Highly recommended for lovers of Geometry.

Yaglom's book in Geometry are true gems. I'm not saying too much about this book, just because it is long enough that I haven't finished it. However, there are some characteristics that could be very helpful for the buyers: the paperback is a bit weak, so treat the book carefully. It is not similar to the previous volumes of the collection at all. It is a bit different (even inside, where there are some restructuration with respect to the others). The book deserves each penny, but I can't say the same about the work that the editorial made with the softcover.

Are you a design- and professional engineer? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Bert Henderson and Edmar Camargo, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that provides the new generation of design engineers with basic theory; a glimpse into the history of mixer technology development; and, to professional engineers, it offers a wealth of material on important publications and patents.

Authors Henderson and Camargo, begin with an introduction to the origins of mixer technology, starting with the prevacuum tube era, up to its golden age in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Next, the authors discuss the application of mixers in systems, along with the parameters associated with mixers. Then, they discuss the modeling of diode, bipolar, and FET devices that apply particulary to use in frequency conversion circuits.
In addition, the authors describe the basic building blocks in mixers, with emphasis on balun theory, one of the most important components in a mixer. They also introduce the basic theory of diode mixers, including the conventional theory by Torrey and Whitmer in the 1940s, the work of Saleh in the 1970s, and the work of Maas in recent years. The authors continue with a summary of patents and major publications on the application of diodes to various topologies and classes of mixers. Next, they deal with the theory of bipolar transistor mixers; as well as, applications. Then, the authors detail the theory of FET mixers and the principles of operation of the FET family for active and passive approaches. In addition, they discuss the applications of passive FET mixers. Finally, the authors present the applications of active FET mixers.

Following the success of The Color Code, in which psychologist and business coach Hartman popularized the use of color to characterize personality types (e.g., "red" people seek power; "blues" crave intimacy), the author has revised and retitled this companion volume, which he originally self-published in 1991 as The Character Code. However, fans of his initial pop-psychology blueprint for getting along with others may be disappointed with the meager fare here. Though brief, the book meanders and suffers from poor writing. It is most engaging when explaining the nuances of color typing, though it assumes some familiarity with the basic types. Hartman's aim is to bring readers who know their "color" to a higher plane of "psycho-social-spiritual health," and to encourage readers to become "charactered"Ain other words, to assume the strengths of the other personality types. For example, the fun-loving "yellow" might benefit from learning the expressive power of the "blue." His steps to becoming "charactered" include learning to value oneself, to have "clean" motives, to focus one's commitments and to serve others. Unfortunately, the wisdom and validity of his thinking is obscured by an occasionally preachy tone and odd case histories. Self-improvement seekers would do better to look to Stephen Covey or others for more lucid writing, or to buy The Color Code for fun. (June)

This book answers a lot of questions.

You should really read this book if you have been unhappy with your "lot" in life or are just plain unhappy with yourself. It answers a lot of questions and is like taking a look in the mirror. It may seem simplistic to break down the human personality into four color groups, but if you read through the book and spend some time on the tables, you will find your core personality. Then things will become much more clear. One whole chapter is spent on valuing oneself and its relevance to your whole being and to self-actualization. Dr. Hartman describes how doing what you love to do is part of valuing yourself. It asks that you not give up what you love, which is exactly what I had been doing. I found the book to be easy to follow and very logical and sensible. I've read through it once, but am going to keep it on hand to keep reminding me that there is hope.

Tired of the same old self help psychobable?

Then read this book by Dr. Taylor Hartman. After reading his first two books on "The Color Code" and "The Character Code", this is the obvious follow up book on how to use the strengths and weaknesses of each personality "color" type presented by Dr. Hartman to understand your own inherent strengths and weaknesses. This book helps you examine your motives for doing the things you do and determining if they are "clean" motive or "dirty" motives. This is a recipe book for developing good character and is a must read for all parents and their teenage children as well. Dr.Hartman takes up where Dr. Laura leaves off by showing us how to become a more charactered human being instead of just telling us we should become one!

The book is awesome! I noticed a very bitter review written above and was so shocked I decided to write my own! (First let me state I do not know Hartman and I am not writing this review because of any connection to him! I am writing this because this book is amazing and I hope everyone looking into this book reads it! So to the bitter person who wrote the review above I say this; What is the cause of your obvious bitter disdain for Dr. Hartman?)

Dr Hartman's identifications of the base personality types is right on target! He very accurately identifies the root motivations and needs of the 4 different personality types helping the reader immediately gain a deeper understanding of human behavior. I love this book so much I have given away 2 copies and have boughten his second book, "Color Your Future." (Another extremely insightful book!) I promise if you get this book you will not regret it!

You Are A Sucker If You Buy This

I found this book in my local library and quickly read through it. After reading the very basic and often misleading advice in the book (play more numbers, buy more tickets, play the same numbers each time, etc), here's my advice: Don't buy or waste your time (all 20 minutes of it) reading this book. Here's why.

- The lottery is a probability game. There is NO WAY to be an 'expert' at beating the system. If I flip a coin 100 times, and I call it correct 74 times, does that make me an expert on how to call a coin flip correctly? Of course not...if anything, I am lucky. Each ball in a lottery machine has the same odds of showing up. So you could see a winning number repeat before you see your numbers come up. That is where his 'play the same numbers' advice is flawed. He makes you think that you are a lock to win by playing the same numbers over and over. Hard reality: Mathematics and probability say you are not a lock even if you play the same numbers for your entire life.
- Lustig has won 7 jackpots, yet his winnings are never described as being much more than $1 million. Why? Because he wins games that have better odds (pick 3's, pick 4's, etc), and just plays a lot. He can't win any 'bonus ball' game because it throws a HUGE wrench into how he plays. And, again to the coin flip example. If we flip 100 times, I call it correct 7 times, am I an expert? Far from it. Just think how many lottery games Lustig has played and NOT won. If he wants to claim his expertise, I'd like to see him break down what he's paid vs. what he's won from the lottery (for example, how much money he invested in playing before he hit each jackpot).
- His advice is simple, at best, and common sense, at worst. It comes down to this: play more. How is that advice to win? Of course if you play more you have a better chance of winning. But you could go through LOTS of cash before you even even come close to breaking even, let alone coming out on top. If you are sitting at a slot machine in Vegas, play $10, you might not win. Put in $100, you might not win. Put in $1,000, you might not win. Get up, and someone puts in $1 and wins. Again, where his advice is flawed. Your investment into the games does not guarantee a positive return. To further that, his simple advice of playing more tickets more often to increase your chance of winning is universally known. So what's he's charging $40 for?

Something tells me that Lustig's income is all from appearances and book royalties at this point. But, for him to claim to be an expert with something that has everything to do with probability and chance is just plain wrong. And the fact that he is so defensive on here against these types of reviews (read the comments of some of the bad ones) goes to show that he knows that he is simply an expert in preying upon the hopes of others.

Save your money

No need to buy the book, just buy more tickets with the money instead. The books basic info-buy a lot of tickets and play the same numbers every week.(I just saved you $40). How did this guy win so much? There is no system or secret. He spends a lot of money on tickets. But keeps reminding the readers to only spend what they can afford. Sorry. If you must read it, wait until it gets to your library.

This book is a scam and i am very surprised that amazon is selling it. dont waste your money. there is no secret 26 pages with the first 7 pages all about his family winning. the last 2 pages nothing. and in between lets just say nothing to write about. all you need is your common sense. He doesnt have a secret noone can predict how the numbers will fall. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY. i am getting my money back....
