Ellaworth, yes or no

I am an intermediate turner, and do both bowl and spindle work. This book is heavily based on using the Ellsworth "signature gouge" for face grain - the bowls, pots and vessels. I had an Ellsworth gouge, because of seeing his video, before buying the book. To use this book you will either have to buy one, or regrind another bowl gouge to his form. I recommend it, although I'd take some of the instructions with a grain of salt. Like most skilled turners whose books I've read, or videos seen, he has a particular dedication to his style. An understandable thing as each of them has developed a skill and a style over years.

If I were to have three books on turning I'd have this Ellsworth book, and Richard Raffan's Turning Wood and his Turning Bowls. Raffan uses classic fingernail gouges and Ellsworth his signature gouge. I bounce between them, sometimes I like the classical and sometimes the signature, depending on the wood and the cut.

A final note, my first signature gouge was a 1/2" (flute width, 5/8" shaft). I work on a midi lathe and have since bought a 3/8" as well. I'd reground another 3/8" to the Ellsworth shape, but went for the original once I got the book. Both work well on my turnings, but if you are on a midi I'd go for the 3/8" first. Packard Woodworking sells both online in the USA.

Buy the book, but don't take it as gospel. Use Ellsworth's cuts, and the classical cuts, and find your own style. A final comment on books versus video, view the video but buy the book, you will find it is easier to remind yourself of the cut opening a book to the page rather than skipping through the video.

Fabulous Book

I have been turning less than two years but have read more than a dozen books on turning and own three of Raffan's and Keith Rowley's book. I have had the opportunity to see Dave Ellsworth demontrate at a symposium. I really like his book! Reading parts of the book reminded me of the notes I took at his demo covering points I was not aware of or failed to realize the importance. It is an inspirational book and covers topics frequently missed in other books like making your own tools. It has a great chapter on Design. It is probably not the first book a new turner would buy as it does not cover basics as well as some others like Keith Rowley's Wouldturning: a Foundation Course. But if you have advanced to bowls and hollow forms you need to get this book.

This board book is nice and big

This board book is nice and big, with darling and very colorful illustrations. My grandson just loves it! We read it along with the little youtube video of the same title and its such a good go-together.

Incredible art and fun, humorous story

This book has always entertained all the children I have read it to. The art is clear and cute. A tired zookeeper (Joe) checks on all the animals in his zoo, but unbeknownst to him, the zookeeper is followed by Gorilla, who has pilphered the zoo's keys. Hence, the animals follow Joe and Gorilla to Joe's home across the street from the zoo. Each animal follows the oblivious Joe into his home and each selects a warm, quiet spot in the house for a more comfortable sleep. I will leave the rest of the story to your own read (no spoilers here.)

I have never tired of reading this to my students or children in my life. It is truly a winner.

I am adding here that it has been now become my practice to give this as a board book at baby showers. I think it would be a shame that there be any mothers and children who have not bonded over this book. The colors, the humor, the predictability, the little gimmicks like the balloon in the air through out the book... my, it's just impossible to fail with this book.

Sweet and Fun

Goodnight, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann is a fun story with minimal words and a lot of sneaky action.

As Zookeeper Joe makes his rounds to say goodnight to all of the animals in the zoo, the sneaky gorilla steals his keys! While Joe says his goodnights to each animal in the zoo, gorilla follows along and sets each animal free from his cage. All of the animals then follow Joe home, where his wife wishes him a goodnight and they wish her a "goodnight" in response.

Children can relate to Gorilla and his desire to sleep in the zookeeper's bed. My kids always found it quite humorous when the zookeeper's wife discovered all of the animals.

My kids also loved searching for the mouse with the banana on each page.

This book is wonderfully illustrated and we love this charming story.

An excellent case study of interethnic relations

Bringa, a lecturer of social anthropology at Bergen University of Norway, conducted extensive fieldwork over a period of six years in a mixed Croat-Muslim village in Central Bosnia. Through careful ethnography she has observed the ways in which such concepts as "ethnos", "nation", and "religion" were understood by, and effected the Bosnians with whom she studied. She demonstrates the complexities of interethnic relations on a micro-level. This study helps question overarching theories of nationalism, which exaggerate the difference between different nations. This study is detailed, well-researched and well-written. Despite its detail, it can be highly recommended for anybody working on or interested in Bosnia, former Yugoslavia and interethnic relations.

Excellent description of Bosnian Muslims

Over the past three years I've become close to a Bosnian Muslim extended family living in Central Texas. This past summer I was invited to spent almost 3 weeks in the Sanski Most area. About two years ago I read this book, and it has been invaluable in helping me understand customs practiced in Bosnia, and to some extent practiced in the U.S. when practical. I gave the book to one of the youth who is having a problem adjusting to U.S. life. She found some solace in having a snapshot of a life she never fully lived as she had to leave when she was 7 years old. The book is well written, engaging, and more importantly, reflects the life of these rural Muslim Bosnians very accurately.

A unique book that is well worth reading

Filled with observation of the Muslim and (to a lesser extent) Croat culture of a typical mixed Muslim-Croat village in central Bosnia. The author, a Norwegian anthropologist, had done fieldwork in Bosnia-Hercegovina during the five years preceding the 1992-1995 wars. She wrote the book during those wars and after the village that she had studied had been destroyed. Well worth reading. (I discovered Bringa as I was writing Untangling Bosnia and Hercegovina, a book about post-war Bosnia and Hercegovina. I found her book to be an absolutely unique and valuable resource.)

This proves true even in the patriarchal narratives where the sins of God's chosen often threaten the very promise intended for their ultimate good. These facts, which the author attempts to demonstrate in the monograph, not only have important ramifications for the unity of the Genesis corpus, but they also have important implications for the doctrines of sin, justification, and sanctification.

Where Sin Abounds is a wonderfully thorough exegesis of the proliferation of sin in the primeval and patriarchal narratives of Genesis. Painstakingly working through primeval history, Dr. Gonzales shows that the theme of sin does not in fact stop when patriarchal history begins. With refreshingly level-headed scholarship, it is made plainly evident that sin is truly a major theme in the entire book of Genesis. From the Garden of Eden, to Sodom, to Abraham and his descendants, no sin is left unexposed. While addressing the more obvious sins of the wicked, Dr. Gonzales provides great insight revealing the darkness that marred the lives of the great patriarchs. From sin-torn families to murderous wrath, the sometimes overly exalted saints of old behaved even worse than their wicked neighbors! Time after time, the precious promise of God is placed in danger by it's recipients, and yet where sin increased, God's grace increased all the more. When the patriarchs stumbled, God shows Himself faithful to pick them up again and again. This book gives the reader a clearer understanding of Genesis by lowering sinful man to his proper place, and exalting the great God who's word never fails.

Though a technical work, this book is extremely readable. It brings fresh insight to the book of Genesis, and is also of immediate pastoral value. The realities of progressive sanctification in the life of the patriarchs, the ongoing war against sin, and God's everlasting faithfulness to His chosen ones, offer great encouragement to believers. This work will be a welcome addition to any serious student of the Scriptures.

Where Sin Abounds

Sin runs deep in the book of Genesis. From the fall of Adam to the murder of Abel, from the flood to the tower of Babel; the sins of men seem to increase exponentially as they multiply and populate the earth. As the book of Genesis moves from primeval history into the account of the patriarchs, most biblical commentators note a major thematic shift from sin to grace. Yet this method of analysis does not satisfy the questions raised by the abiding and increasing presence of sin in the patriarchal narratives. The "Covenant family" is often seen to be even more sinful than their pagan neighbors! Thankfully, a better way of understanding the accounts in Genesis is presented in Where Sin Abounds by Robert R. Gonzales Jr. Rather than excuse or avoid the pervasive sin of God's people, Gonzales deals with it directly in this exhaustive and penetrating analysis. Only one character emerges who remains perfectly faithful throughout the Genesis account: the LORD God Himself. Gonzales demonstrates that it was neither intrinsic merit nor works of righteousness by which the patriarchs found favor in the sight of God. Rather, it was by His grace alone and over against all of their human frailty that God chose and blessed Abraham and his sons. This is a book which drives the reader to the text of Scripture itself with fresh eyes and toward prayerful contemplation of the depths of God's grace to sinners- grace ultimately expressed in the cross of Jesus Christ. Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more (Romans 5:20)!

Superior book and a must-read before any exposition of Genesis

Dr. Gonzales brings thorough scholarship, while maintaining readability in this very helpful work. As a seminary graduate, the book of Genesis is familiar ground for me, but I found much illumination, particularly appreciating comparisons and contrasts, enabling me to make significant connections both within and without Genesis. I also believe he provides a much needed correction to the skewed view of many who see the Patriarchs as "Plaster Saints." I personally came away encouraged and reminded of the unmerited grace that God gives to believers and that God gives to me. This superior book is an absolute must-read before any exposition of Genesis. It will greatly assist both pastor and scholar alike.

About the Author
Edward S. Tobias, Professor of Genetic Medicine, University of Glasgow, and Honorary Consultant in Medical Genetics, West of Scotland Regional Genetics Service, Institute of Medical Genetics, Glasgow. Medical Genetics undergraduate Teaching Lead, Clinical Director, MSc in Medical Genetics, and Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. 
Prof Tobias won the Best College Teacher Award at Glasgow University in March 2014 and March 2013, as chosen by the Student Representative Council and the students themselves, who have described him as "a brilliant teacher... who is passionate about his subject", who has "made the subject of Medical Genetics understandable for all abilities" and has "made the topic (genetics) seem simple!"
He also won the Teaching Excellence Award 2012 from the University's Principal and Senate Committee. 
Glasgow University came top in the UK National Student Survey 2012 for Genetics teaching.

One of the best textbooks in the field of Medical Genetics

This book provided me with the basic understanding of Medical Genetics and the essentials of its clinical application. The book's first chapters (Part 1) discuss the processes of gametogenesis, the structure and function of chromosomes, nucleic acids and DNA analysis methods. The following chapters (Part 1) give a detailed explanation with examples of different types of inheritance (typical mendelian inheritance, atypical mendelian inheritance, and non-mendelian inheritance). Part 2 provides insight about clinical genetics, genetic counselling, and screening methodologies. Part 3 provides guidance for the use of electronic databases which i find very improtant for clinicians, scientists, and student who which to pursue a career in medical genetics.
I would highly recommend this textbook as a sufficient source of medical genetics readings due to its simplicity and depths at the same time.
